Tatiana "Tati" McQuay (born August 30, 2003) is an Canadian-American Internet celebrity, dancer, choreographer, and rapper. She is mostly known for her work with the girl group L2M, which included starring in the YouTube Premium (formerly YouTube Red) series Hyperlinked, as well as her TikTok and Instagram accounts. McQuay has also appeared in some promotional material for tween media divisions (such as Disney Channel), frequently alongside other influencers and dancers, including Mackenzie Ziegler, Chloe Lukasiak[1], and various students and notable people from Millennium Dance Complex.[2]
As of January 2022, McQuay has accumulated 1.7 million followers on TikTok and 723,000 followers on Instagram.
Biography[edit]
Tatiana McQuay was born in Kitchener, Ontario, in 2003 to bodybuilder Stan McQuay and to Michelle De Maria McQuay. When she was 7 years old, she moved to Los Angeles, California.[3] She also has two siblings named Kai and Zen McQuay born in 2011 and 2013, respectively.[4]
Though she had previously danced in Alyson Stoner's Missy Elliott tribute on YouTube, McQuay's first major breakthrough came upon joining the girl group L2M, formed in 2016 with Warner Records and featured prominently in a Lego Friends television film titled Girlz for Life.[5] The single L2M released with the movie, simply titled Girlz, became a small success and has 6.7 million views on YouTube as of April 2021.[6] A video published by the L2M official YouTube channel where McQuay comments on her role within the band highlights her accomplishments as a choreographer; in the same video, she also states she earned a black belt in karate.[3] L2M later released the singles "Incredible" (which was featured in some Target commercials)[7], "B.E.A.T", and "Living to the Rhythm" and gained a role in a YouTube Kids Holiday Special alongside Hayden Summerall and Cam Anthony.[8]
When L2M was cast in the leading roles for the YouTube Red series Hyperlinked[9], McQuay choreographed a significant portion of the dances. A video posted about McQuay's role as the character "Izzy" noted how similar Izzy and McQuay are similar in real life. McQuay also remarked working with the rest of the band was not only easier to do but also he she didn't "have to feel nervous to do anything".[10] Before disbanding, L2M and McQuay published three more records: "Overthinking", "Tag Me In", and "Don't Come Back Around"; McQuay's rapping is generally more prominent across the former two of these records.[11][12][13] A fourth record, "I Want My Dippin' Dots", was also released in 2018 and paid for by Dippin' Dots LLC, which was deemed by the magazine Rolling Stone as 2019's "true song of the summer".[14]
McQuay cameoed in the music video for the single "What If", performed by Johnny Orlando and Mackenzie Ziegler, and later in Ziegler's music video for the song "Exhale", a collaboration with Sia.[15][16] Later that year, she released her first single, "Parachute", which was a mix of spoken word, rap, and song as a collaboration with the artist Cookie Cutters.[17] McQuay received additional notability by being the recipient of the #MiVoz award, which was given by Instagram and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. She was especially noted for her dance workshops in Colombia and the Dominican Republic, and for inspiring girls in Kenya. McQuay was additionally credited with helping to build schools in Kenya [18]
In 2019, McQuay released the single "Admit It" and starred in the AwesomenessTV web-series "It's my Party", where the logistics and planning of her joint sweet sixteen with model Lily Chee.[19] Her sweet sixteen was covered by Gen-Z celebrity-related websites like Celeb Secrets TV.[20] She collaborated with Ziegler again for a Disney Channel-produced advertisement for the release of Zombies 2, in which Ziegler portrayed Addison and McQuay a cheerleader.[1] McQuay has also made cameos in many music videos and is often associated with TikTok dancer Matt Steffanina's online video tutorials.[21]
