TaxCloud is an American software-as-a-service company that provides sales and use tax compliance tools for online retailers, SaaS companies and other businesses that sell into multiple U.S. states. Its platform calculates sales tax at the point of sale, tracks economic nexus thresholds, registers businesses with state tax authorities, and prepares, files and remits sales tax returns.[1] The service is operated by The Federal Tax Authority, LLC (also known as FedTax), which does business as TaxCloud.[1][2]

TaxCloud is one of a small number of Certified Service Providers (CSPs) under the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, which allows it to offer filing services at no charge to eligible sellers in Streamlined member states.[3]

History

Founding and early years

FedTax (now TaxCloud) was founded in 2008.[4] David Campbell, a co-founder, served as the company's chief executive officer. Before TaxCloud, Campbell had founded the data-storage companies Deep9 and Punch Networks.[5]

In its early years, TaxCloud was positioned as a free compliance service for retailers, with its costs largely covered by the states participating in the Streamlined Sales Tax program.[6] The service had more than 24,000 retailer customers and was available on e-commerce platforms and marketplaces including Amazon, Etsy and Shopify.[6]

Policy involvement

FedTax was active in the debate over the collection of sales tax on remote and internet sales. Campbell, as CEO of FedTax, was among the signatories of a February 2012 coalition letter urging the Senate Finance Committee to support the Marketplace Fairness Act.[7] A prepared statement from Campbell and Joan Wagnon, then executive vice president of The Federal Tax Authority, was included in the record of the August 1, 2012 hearing of the Senate Commerce Committee on the legislation.[8]

Following the U.S. Supreme Court's 2018 decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., which allowed states to require out-of-state sellers to collect sales tax, the Norwalk-based company launched its first national advertising campaign, titled "Gimme Tax Cloud", on Sirius XM and digital platforms.[9]

Investment and leadership changes

On April 17, 2023, TaxCloud announced a $20 million growth equity round led by Camber Partners, a New York–based growth equity firm. It was Camber's first investment in the e-commerce sales tax sector.[10][11] The company said the funding would support expansion of its products, marketing and sales operations.[11] EcommerceBytes described the transaction as giving TaxCloud a new owner as well as a new CEO.[12]

As part of the investment, Nate Gilmore was appointed chief executive officer.[10] Gilmore had previously led marketing at the logistics company Shipwire and served as chief revenue officer and chief marketing officer at PandaDoc.[12] As of 2026, the company's website lists Joe Stanton as CEO and Gilmore as chairman and chief strategy officer.[4]

Products and services

TaxCloud's platform includes the following functions:[1][3]

  • Sales tax calculation – real-time tax rate calculation across more than 13,000 U.S. taxing jurisdictions, with automatic rate updates.
  • Filing and remittance – preparation, filing and payment of sales tax returns in all 50 states.
  • Nexus tracking – monitoring of sales against each state's economic nexus thresholds, with notifications when a threshold is reached.
  • State registration – registration for sales tax permits in states where a seller has nexus.
  • Product taxability codes – classification of products by taxability.
  • Exemption certificate management – collection and storage of exemption certificates for tax-exempt buyers.
  • Audit support – assistance with documentation during state sales tax audits.

Streamlined Sales Tax program

As a Certified Service Provider approved by the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board, TaxCloud offers eligible sellers return preparation, filing and remittance, exemption certificate processing, and registration in Streamlined member states at no charge.[3][13] The company describes this as free filing in 24 states.[1] Under its contracts with the Governing Board, TaxCloud acts as an agent for sellers who register through the program, and its services may be paid for by member states.[14]

Integrations

TaxCloud offers prebuilt integrations with e-commerce, billing and accounting platforms including Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Magento, Odoo, QuickBooks, Stripe and Chargebee, along with a developer API.[1][3]

Pricing

TaxCloud sells tiered subscription plans, each with a 30-day free trial.[3] An independent software directory describes the company as aimed at mid-sized businesses and focused on U.S. sales and use tax rather than international value-added tax or e-invoicing.[15]
