Te Motu Vineyard is a winery in the Onetangi Valley on Waiheke Island in New Zealand. Established in 1988 by the Dunleavy family, the winery helped shape the island's early commercial wine industry.[1]

History

Te Motu planted its first vines in 1988, which included Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s name is derived from a Māori name for Waiheke Island meaning "the island."[1]

Its first vintage in 1993 later received a gold medal at the 1994 International Wine Awards.[2]

Wines

The winery produces a Bordeaux-style red blend called “Te Motu,” alongside other varietals including Syrah and Chardonnay. According to *Cuisine Wine*, the wines display "restrained power and excellent ageing potential."[3]

Te Motu wines have featured in the New Zealand Wine Awards.[4]

Restaurant

The onsite restaurant, The Shed at Te Motu, serves seasonal menus. In 2017, the New Zealand Herald noted its "Waiheke experience anchored in regional produce and fine wines."[5] In 2021, Metro magazine listed it among the year's standout Auckland dining venues.[6]
