Teal Swan (born on June 16th, 1984)[1] is an American New Age spiritual leader, public speaker, author and YouTuber.[2][3][4][5][6][7]
Early Life[edit]
Teal Swan was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, US. She claims that when she was 6 years old, she was inducted as a child into a local religious cult by a family acquaintance, where she was routinely ritualistically tortured and programmed for a period of thirteen years. According to Teal, she managed to escape from the cult when she was 19 years old.[8][9][10]
Career[edit]
On January 25, 2011, she launched the Youtube channel TheSpiritualCatalyst. Since then, the channel has accumulated over 450,000 subscribers and over 54 million total views as of March, 2018.[11][12]
On May 23, 2012, she released her first book titled The Sculptor in the Sky[13] and has since published two more books: Shadows Before Dawn[14] (2015) and The Completion Process[15] (2016), all of which have substantial reviews on Amazon.com.
Teal has contributed articles to the Huffington Post on topics such including relationships, overcoming abuse, endurism, and other emotional challenges.[16]
Teal Swan is ranked 27th on Watkins magazine’s list of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People in 2018 (published both online and in print).[17]
In December 2016 Teal Swan opened her own retreat center in Costa Rica and now regularely holds workshops there.[18]
Teal has appeared on several magazine covers:
Teal Swan also has a growing social media presence:
- Facebook (over 159k followers as of May 2018)[21]
- Instagram (over 67k followers as of May 2018)[22]
- Twitter (over 15.6k followers as of May 2018)[23]
Teal Swan has been named relatable, authentic and a positive inspiration for shadow-work and gratitude practices.[24][25][26][27]
Teal Swan has an ongoing world tour where she travels around the globe holding many events, including speaking arrangements at spiritual centers like Kirpalu[28] and festivals like the annual London Wellbeing festival in the UK [29] in the topics of how to release anger [30], advice on sexuality[31][32], shame[33], parenting[34].
Teal Swan has developed The Completion Process - an emotional process that addresses healing from trauma. The process has been recognised by the ICF (International Coach Federation).[35][36][37]
Documentary and Podcast[edit]
In 2016 a documentary on Teal Swan was released: Open Shadow: The Story of Teal Swan. It depicts how by embracing the darkness Teal found her greatest light. The synopsis of the documentary reads:
After escaping a life of abuse at the hands of a Utah cult, a young woman sets out to teach others the tools of spiritual and emotional healing, all while healing herself along the way.[38]
In June 2018, Gizmodo launched a 6 part investigative podcast entitled The Gateway about Teal's teachings and controversial methodologies. The Gateway is available at Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, Google Play, iHeart Radio, or TuneIn.[2][39][40]

Controversy and Criticism[edit]
Teal Swan has been met by controversy throughout her carreer. She is a polemic figure and has several critics that focus on questioning her extrasensory abilities and claiming that she has lied about past events and exploits her followers.[18] Rick Ross, the executive director of the Cult Education Institute, is quoted saying:
In my opinion, Teal Swan fits the pattern of a [cult leader]. She has apparently become an object of worship, and it seems that her charisma and supernatural claims are the driving force of her school of healing and workshops.[43]
Teal is critizsized for claiming herself as a revolutionary, going so far as to compare herself to Martin Luther King Jr, Jesus Christ, and Gandhi. She also claims to have been born with extrasensory powers, including “clairvoyance, clairsentience and clairaudience. Teal's community Teal Tribe movement has been heavily critisized for cencorship.[43][44]
In May of 2018 Gizmodo released their first six-part investigative podcast on Teal Swan.[3] The podcast questions both Teal's work and Teal's critics. They went to her online devotee communities and traveled to her retreat center in Costa Rica to try to understand this new spiritual movement. The podcast series is still to be fully released.[39][40]
