Team Fukushima
Team Fukushima is a non-profit organization (NPO) in Fukushima Prefecture.
Overview[edit]
Team Fukushima was established by young entrepreneurs and office workers in Fukushima and incorporated in 2012. The organization has been developing Fukushima Sunflower Foster-Parent Project(福島ひまわり里親プロジェクト, Fukushima Himawari Satooya Project)which is a reconstruction support activity for the Great East Japan Earthquake(and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Accident)since May 2011.
About 14,000 individuals, schools and companies participated in the project in 2011[1].
In 2012, a elementary school in Fukui prefecture and the NPO boosted exchanges[2].
In 2013, mainly a local revitalizing group in Oita prefecture took part in the project[3], and a volunteer group in Hiroshima prefecture took part in the project[4].
In the same year, a picture book “Tripcy’s Sunflower Field” was published and the picture-story show was played in a elementary school in Aichi prefecture[5].
In addition, many people from all over the prefecture have participated in the projects[6][7][8][9][10][11] and all of the participating organization are listed in the official HP[12].
In 2013, these sunflowers bloomed in 16,000 places in Fukushima[13]. Currently, a cumulative total of more than 550,000 people and more than 5,900 schools in all prefectures (except Fukushima) have participated in the project[14].
Besides, the NPO has expanded the range of activity with rapid change of global and economic situation.
In March 2021, the project started a crowdfunding campaign to present picture books to Syrian refugee children. The book “My Dear Mr. sunflower” depicts the experience of a refugee and the process of reconstruction in Fukushima. More than 1,000 picture books were translated into Arabic and donated[15].
In May 2021, one of the founding members Hirohaku Yoshinari passed away. With his cherished desire, pre-packaged curry for children’s cafeterias was developed[16]. This curry is regularly donated to children’s cafeterias in Fukushima[17].
In February 2022, a community fridge “Community Fridge Sunflower” which can be used without worrying about what others think of one’s self opened in Fukushima City. The facility is offering groceries and daily necessities to users. This is the first apartment-type community fridge in Japan[18].
In March 2022, the “Sunflower Disaster Prevention Certification Test” was launched[19]. The test can be utilized in disaster prevention education in schools and corporate training to raise awareness of disaster prevention, to prevent the memory of the 3.11 from fading away, and to promote tourism in Fukushima.
Purpose[edit]
According to the official HP, "Team Fukushima develops projects for reconstruction support activity in areas affected by the disaster and for energizing Japan from Fukushima. The goal is the realization of a society that all people can have the happiest life with dreams and ambition[20]."
