Telelaudo is a Brazilian teleradiology company, founded in 2009 by Flávio Lanes, Fernanda Cipriano, Robert Lapidus, Greg Lowenstein and Brett Brinson, with headquarters in Vitória, Espírito Santo.[1] The telemedicine and radiology company uses technology to provide remote reports 24 hours a day and remotely carry out computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams.[2][3]
In 2015, Telelaudo merged with its biggest competitor, Pró-Laudo, to become the largest teleradiology company in Latin America, with the capacity to issue 60,000 analysis reports per month.[4][5] By 2021, Telelaudo had already issued more than 4.7 million reports to more than 450 clinics across Brazil.[6]
History
Telelaudo
The initiative to bring teleradiology to Brazil was born out of an invitation that radiologist Flávio Lanes received to open a radiology clinic in the south of Bahia. Entrepreneurship in a remote location like the interior of Bahia was a good opportunity from a business point of view, but the distance was an obstacle from a personal and family point of view. That's why Lanes, who already had radiology and imaging clinics, started looking for solutions to remotely serve markets in need of radiological exams and came across teleradiology.[1]
At the time, technologies that enabled teleradiology services did not yet exist in Brazil, so he contacted Robert Lapidus, a fellow radiologist he had met during an internship at the University of Miami. Robert was a partner of Greg Lowenstein, who was a pioneer in North American teleradiology and who, in 2007, had sold his company, RadLinx, then the 3rd largest company in the field in the USA, to NightHawk, the leading company in the USA, for US$ 53 million.[7][8][9]
Thus began the first efforts to create a joint venture in Brazil, in which the US company ConnectRad, which belonged to Greg, Robert and a third partner called Brett Brinson, would transfer its technology and market experience to be used in the Brazilian market.[1] In Brazil, Lanes invited Fernanda Cipriano to join the partnership as head of marketing and the company's entire operation.[10]
In 2009, Telelaudo was launched during the 39th Jornada Paulista de Radiologia (JPR-2009).[11]
Pró-Laudo
In 2009, doctors Felipe Nirenberg and Felipe Moraes and computer engineer Alexandre Ribenboim created another teleradiology company in Rio de Janeiro, Pró-Laudo. Niremberg was doing his radiology residency with Moraes and, during a Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) event in the United States, he learned about teleradiology. They found a partner with experience in technology and business, Alexandre Ribemboim, and created the company.[12][13]
At the time, Pró-Laudo entered into a partnership with Virtual Radiologic (vRad), a global teleradiology company, to provide the technology needed to operate teleradiology in Brazil.[14][15] In 2010, the company received R$2 million in investments from Finep funds and incentives to expand its services to more clients.[16] In 2013, Pró-Laudo announced the successful implementation of the eRAD PACS tool with customized reports and voice recognition localized to Brazilian Portuguese. The tool has been adapted to the needs of the Brazilian market, reducing connection times by up to 90% and enabling better delivery times for reports.[17]
Fusão Telelaudo | Pró-laudo
In 2015, Telelaudo announced a merger with its biggest competitor, Pró-Laudo. With the merger, Telelaudo became the largest teleradiology company in Latin America, with the capacity to issue 60,000 reports per month. According to Valor Econômico, the new company forecast an increase of R$30 million in revenue in 2016, a 50% increase on the previous year.[4] At the time, Telelaudo still had a partnership with the US company ConnectRad, responsible for the teleradiology operating system.[18]
In the same year, Telelaudo created Telelaudo Odonto and began offering remote reports for dental clinics.
In 2016, the company invested in the development of the Connect HL7 solution to integrate RIS (Radiology Information System) systems for hospitals and clinics with Telelaudo's teleradiology system, automating the receipt of reports. The solution was presented at the Jornada Paulista de Radiologia 2016 (JPR 2016).[19]
In 2018, Telelaudo celebrated 10 years in the Brazilian teleradiology market, during the 48th edition of the Jornada Paulista de Radiologia (JPR 2018), and the milestone of more than 2.5 million reports issued.
In 2021, Telelaudo reported that it had produced more than 4.7 million reports for more than 450 hospitals.[6] In the same year, the company launched the Telecommand service, in which the radiology examination is carried out remotely, eliminating the need for a radiographer to be at the patient's location.
In 2022, Telelaudo became the first and only teleradiology company in Brazil to receive PADI accreditation - the Brazilian Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Program –granted by the Brazilian College of Radiology's (CBR) Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Commission (CADI).[20][21][22]
In 2023, Telecommand began operating with two command centers, one in Belo Horizonte-MG and the other in Vitória-ES. At the time, an average of 500 MRI and CT scans per month were carried out by equipment operated via remote control. In 2024, Telelaudo opened two more command centers, one in Santa Catarina and the other in Recife-PE, now serving seven Brazilian states and recording almost 100,000 exams performed remotely.[23][1][3]
Outras fusões e aquisições
Diagrad
In 2019, Telelaudo announced the acquisition of DiagRad, a teleradiology company in São Paulo founded by radiologists Fábio Kenji, Paulo Kuriki and executive Rodrigo Jacinto. The merger of the companies allowed for the expansion of services to more clients and the growth of clinical staff trained at the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP).[24][25]
Teleradimagem
Also in 2019, Telelaudo announced a partnership with TeleMedimagem to create Teleradimagem. TeleMedimagem was created by a group of radiologists from Med Imagem, the radiology department of Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa in São Paulo, and had been operating in the market for over 10 years. With the merger, Teleradimagem now has the financial and administrative infrastructure of Telelaudo.[26]
Tesla Telerradiologia
In 2024, Telelaudo announced a new merger with Tesla Telerradiologia with the aim of expanding its services in the Midwest of Brazil. With the merger, the founders of Tesla, doctors Cristiano Montandon, Renato Duarte and Paulo Eduardo Marinho, took on the positions of medical coordinators in the new company.[27]
Serviços
Reports
Since 2009, Telelaudo has been offering remote reports for tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, X-rays, mammography, bone densitometry and dentistry.
Telecomando
Since 2023, Telelaudo has been offering the telecommand service, a remote service in which the radiology radiographer remotely operates the MRI and CT equipment of a partner clinic from one of the teleradiology command centers. The solution used is from IONIC Health, a Brazilian technology company backed by GE HealthCare, which has been authorized to operate one of its remote healthcare services by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the United States.[28][3]
Tecnologias
Artificial Intelligence
Telelaudo uses artificial intelligence to help doctors write reports of radiology exams. The company adopted the technology of Laudite, a Brazilian startup founded in 2019, which offers an online intelligent voice recognition platform, reducing the time it takes to write, format and review the text, and adding standardization and greater efficiency to the preparation of the report.[1][29]
Robotics
Telelaudo's Remote Control service uses a digital platform that combines robotics, hardware and software to allow the radiographer to remotely operate a clinic's MRI and CT equipment. The software used allows the controls to be virtualized and transmitted so that the radiographer can carry out the examination remotely; on the other hand, the robot at the examination site interacts with the equipment as if it were the radiographer himself.[30]
Impact and Relevance
In a country with continental dimensions and a growing demand for exams like Brazil, teleradiology is a part of telemedicine that helps to solve problems of access to reports in more remote locations and where there is a shortage of professionals in the field, especially subspecialized ones like neuroradiologists.[31]
In the North of Brazil, there were 10 radiologists for every 100,000 inhabitants. According to 2020 data, in São Paulo, there were 10 radiologists for every 100,000 inhabitants, while in the northern part of Brazil, there were less than 3 radiologists for every 100,000 inhabitants. With the difficulty in attracting radiologists to more remote areas, teleradiology has become an effective solution for improving access to examinations in Brazil.[32]
By delivering reports remotely, Telelaudo is able to offer quality of life to radiologists who are able to work from different locations, often far from congested urban centers, and with less work overload, as well as to patients who need to wait less time for the results of their exams, whether routine exams or emergency room exams.[33][34]
COVID-19 Pandemic
In August 2020, Brazil was facing one of the highest rates of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the world. Due to the scarcity of RT-PCR tests, which are recommended for confirming the disease, computed tomography (CT) of the chest has become an important tool for diagnosing and managing suspected cases, as recommended by the WHO.[35]
Between March 1 and June 30, 2020, 94 hospitals and diagnostic centers in 15 Brazilian states served by Telelaudo recorded a 192% increase in demand for chest CT scans. With the coverage of remote reports, Telelaudo contributed to a research, carried out in partnership with the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), providing anonymized data from more than 14,000 exams, which helped to demonstrate the importance of medical imaging exams in the response to the pandemic and the impact of COVID-19 on health services in Brazil.[36]
Awards and Recognition
Great Place to Work (GPTW)
In 2023, Telelaudo was awarded the Great Place to Work certificate, with 86% of employees considering it a great place to work. The international consultancy GPTW analyzes thousands of companies in more than 60 countries, recognizing with a seal and certificate those considered to be great places to work.[37]
CBR PADI accreditation
In 2022, Telelaudo became the first teleradiology to be accredited by the CBR's PADI.[22][38]PADI accreditation–Brazil's Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Program–is granted by the Brazilian College of Radiology's (CBR) Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Commission (CADI). PADI is recognized by ISQua (International Society for Quality in Health Care), a WHO (World Health Organization) partner association that certifies accrediting organizations worldwide. To receive PADI accreditation, a company must meet certain quality and safety criteria, such as:
- Teleradiology service systems that meet the requirements of the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) and the Brazilian Society of Health Informatics (SBIS).
- Integration and integrity of data received and sent.
- Safety of professionals in teleradiology services.
- Infrastructure that guarantees the right environment for preparing reports.[20][21]
50+ Health Innovators Award 2019
In 2019, Telelaudo was among the 50 most innovative healthcare institutions in Brazil, in a survey published by Medicina S/A magazine. The survey mapped 25 private hospitals with the best performance in investments and projects involving health information and communication technologies (ICTs), and 25 companies, brands and solutions most remembered for their innovation in ICTs, Digital Health and Telemedicine.[39]
Health References Award 2013 and 2014
Pró-Laudo has won the Health References Award twice in a row, organized by IT Mídia and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), for its work in organizing and managing radiologists who report from home.[40]
