Maria Teresa de Almeida Salgueiro OIH (Portuguese pronunciation: [tɨˈɾezɐ saɫˈɡejɾu]; born 8 January 1969) is a Portuguese singer.[1] She is best known as the lead singer of Madredeus from 1987 until 2007. She also had role as an actress in Wim Wenders' film Lisbon Story.
Music career
While still in Madredeus, Salgueiro released in 2006 the album Obrigado, a collaboration with various artists such as José Carreras, Caetano Veloso, Angelo Branduardi amongst others. In 2007, she recorded two albums in partnership with the Septet João Cristal (Você e Eu) and the Lusitânia Ensemble (La Serena), which explores diverse musical universes demonstrating her versatility as an interpreter. She maintained, with these two projects and for two years, a regular program of concerts in Europe, Brazil, and Mexico.
Also in 2007, by invitation of the Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner, Salgueiro participated as the lead soloist voice on the album Silence Night and Dreams. With this concert, which had its debut at the Acropolis in Athens, she took the stage in several European cities like Paris, London, and Płock.
On June 30, 2007, Salgueiro performed at the Teatro S. Carlo in Naples, by invitation of the Solis String Quartet, playing a set of songs reminiscent of the legacy of Neapolitan music. Two years later, in 2010, the Concert "Canti Naviganti" was created and premiered in selected cities of Italy.
As an independent artist, with the idea of gathering a repertoire that would portray the different Portuguese eras, traditions, customs, and regions, Salgueiro meets again with the Lusitânia Ensemble in August 2008 to create the album Matriz, whose concerts were presented in Europe and Africa.
Voltarei à Minha Terra was a journey through the collective memory of Portuguese music from the 20th century. With a new lineup much closer to her sensitivity, Salgueiro took over the direction of the musical arrangements, drawing an original language that reflects a poetic universe, born of Portuguese words and feelings.
This 25-year journey of uninterrupted dedication to music culminated in the creation of original pieces that were born from Salgueiro's encounter with the musicians she has chosen. For the first time, besides composing the songs, she took upon herself the task of writing all the lyrics. Over nine months, from November 2010 to July 2011, she developed the concepts and ideas that crystallized into musical forms and invited António Pinheiro da Silva, with whom she shared the first 10 years of recordings and concerts of her career, to co-produce this new album. Throughout August 2011, she retired to the Convent of Arrábida with her musicians and, amidst the mountainous surroundings, set up a recording studio where they recorded the 17 tracks that give birth to the album O Mistério.
