Terri O’Sullivan is the founder and co-director of XJW Friends, a support group for former members of the Jehovah's Witnesses based in the UK.

Life & Activism[edit]

O'Sullivan left the Jehovah's Witness religion in 2000 after losing her faith and being told to leave her family home, which resulted in her becoming homeless and losing connection with her family.[1] She went on to found XJW Friends in 2007 to support ex-members who have been disfellowshipped (shunned and ostracised) by their friends and family[2] and has continued to support former Jehovah's Witnesses primarily through Facebook, peer-support meetings and social events.[3][1][4]

She is currently a committee member of Faith to Faithless a section of Humanists UK which supports people who have left high-control religions of all kinds.[citation needed]

Education[edit]

She holds a bachelor’s degree in social psychology from the University of Kent, UK where she conducted research into the effects of ostracism from the Jehovah's Witnesses. She continued this area of research while studying for a master’s degree at Tilburg University, in the Netherlands under the supervision of Professor Ilja van Beest.[5]
