Terry Blade is an American singer-songwriter based in Chicago.[1]

Blade is the 2023 blues category winner of the American Songwriter Song Contest.[2] In 2023, he received his second Hollywood Music in Media Award nomination at the 14th Hollywood Music in Media Awards for his song and music video "Won't Be Around."[3] His first nomination was received in 2020 at the 11th Hollywood Music in Media Awards for his song "The Unloveable."[4] In 2024, Blade's "Won't Be Around" picked up awards for Best Music Video at the Vienna Independent Film Festival,[5] Prague Independent Film Festival,[6] and Berlin Short Film Festival.[7]

Early life[edit]

Blade was born and raised in Washington, DC.[8] He has described his upbringing as "rough," adding that growing up black and gay "was one of the most painful experiences."[9] Blade has credited his mother and grandparents as prominent influences on his music, citing his family's earlier history as black sharecoppers in North Carolina and elsewhere in the southern United States.[9][10]

Career[edit]

2020: Debut[edit]

On April 3, 2020, Blade debuted his acoustic demo single "The Unloveable." The single received a singer-songwriter nomination at the 11th Hollywood Music in Media Awards.[4] The song was featured as the opening track on Blade's EP demo, Misery (Mastered for Headphones), which Blade released on May 8, 2020.[11] In November of 2020, Blade released "The Karen Blues" which garnered attention from country musician Adeem the Artist who described the single as "a witty and biting original song".[12]

2021–2022: American Descendant of Slavery, the Album and Neo Queer[edit]

On February 5, 2021, Blade released his debut album American Descendant of Slavery, the Album.[13] The album featured audio recordings of formerly enslaved African-Americans, and won a Summit Creative Award for Audio at the 2021 Summit Awards.[14][15] The album received national radio airplay across Amazing Radio and a number of NPR member stations.[16][17][18][19][20][21]

On March 1, 2021, the Archives of African American Music and Culture included American Descendant of Slavery, the Album in its Black Grooves publication of the February 2021 Black Music Releases of Note.[22] The Archives of African American Music and Culture classified the album as an r&b, soul release.[22] A month later, Adeem the Artist highlighted the album's track "Mtf," in Country Queer magazine, and wrote that the song "details the story of a trans sex worker who is trying desperately to finance gender confirmation surgery and after defending herself from the violence of a client, ends up in a prison for men".[23] Adeem the Artist also wrote: "It reminds me of CeCe McDonald — though I’m not sure if it’s about her — and it’s a really moving song."[23]

On January 14, 2022, Blade released his second album Neo Queer.[24] Ten days later, musician Frankie Francis featured Blade on his Amazing Afternoons broadcast on Amazing Radio.[25] In Christopher Treacy of Country Queer magazine, wrote that Blade's second album "employed more of a neo-soul delivery system."[26] The album received national radio airplay on Amazing Radio.[27][28]

2023–2024: Won't Be Around and Ethos: Son of a Sharecropper[edit]

On January 6, 2023, Blade released his blues single "Won't Be Around."[29] The single appeared on New Music Weekly's Country Up & Coming Chart.[30] It won first place in the blues category of the 2023 American Songwriter Song Contest.[2] It later received nominations at the 2023 Hollywood Independent Music Awards and the 14th Hollywood Music in Media Awards.[31][32]

"Won't Be Around" was featured as the second track on Blade's third album, Ethos: Son of a Sharecropper, which he released a month later.[33] The album was nominated for Album of the Year: Best Folk/Americana Album at the 2023 Josie Music Awards.[34] The music video for "Wasn't Mine", another song featured on the album, premiered as an official selection of the 2024 Sidewalk Film Festival.[35]

Blade directed and produced the music video for "Won't Be Around" which premiered as an official selection of several film festivals in 2024, including the Tribeca Festival, LA Shorts International Film Festival, and New Media Film Festival.[36][37][38] The music video also premiered at the Prague Independent Film Festival, Vienna Independent Film Festival, and the Berlin Short Film Festival, winning the award for Best Music Video at all three festivals.[5][6][7]

2024–present[edit]

On June 24, 2024, Blade was featured on the Glastonbury Festival 2024 broadcast of Amazing Radio.[39] Two days later, he announced that he had been invited to join The Recording Academy.[40] Blade later received a nomination for Songwriter Achievement at the 2024 Josie Music Awards.[41][42]

Personal life[edit]

Blade identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.[43][44] He is based in Chicago.[1]
