Terry Gomez

Terry (Teresa)  Gomez is from the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma and is a descendant of Covey (Chief Wildhorse). She has a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico and a Masters of Fine Arts Degree from the University of New Mexico. Terry is a published and produced playwright, published writer, theatre director, actor, painter, mentor, editor, and educator. Her play Inter-tribal was produced as a staged reading at The Public Theater in New York City and published in the anthology Plays by Women of Color. Her play Numunu Waiipunu: The Comanche Women has been published in the anthology Reclaiming Greek Drama for Diverse Audiences, An Anthology of Adaptations and Interviews (2020).Carbon Black was given a full production by Native Voices at the Autry; Los Angeles, California. Other plays produced in various New Mexico venues include Numunu Waiipunu: The Comanche Women, Inter-tribal, Reunion, The Antigone, A Day at the Night Hawk, Carbon Black, Rain Dance, Melanin, Waam Pu (The Baby Snake) and The Woman with a Mustache. Tobacco Leaves; a collaboration with Red Eagle Soaring Theater Troupe which premiered in Seattle, Washington and toured the surrounding Washington state area.


  Terry has directed original plays and showcases for the I.A.I.A. as well as Ghost Dance by Annette Arkeketa, Fancy Dancer by Dawn Dumont, and Little Big Horn by Alan Kilpatrick. She has taught workshops for children and teens at the Santa Clara Pueblo Community School, Tesuque Pueblo Language Program, Crown Point Community School and the Native American Community Academy (Albuquerque). She has been artist in residence for the youth troupe Red Eagle Soaring (Seattle, WA); and has given workshops at the International Workshop Festival in London, England. She has directed a series of staged readings for the Two Worlds Native Theater Festival in Albuquerque.  She was a mentor for the Alaska Native Playwright Festival (Anchorage). Terry was also a featured speaker at the 2010 Native American Literature Symposium.


Terry was a recipient of the 2007-2008 American Indian College Fund/Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship. She has been a member of the advisory committee for the Native American Theater Festival at the Public Theater, NYC and formerly on the Board of Directors for the North 4th Art Space in Albuquerque. Terry has been an adjunct faculty teaching theater arts and dramatic writing classes at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and faculty for the I.A.I.A./ABC/Disney Summer Film Program. Currently, she lives in Albuquerque and is a full-time Communications Instructor for the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, and is beginning her 18th year of teaching, mainly at tribal colleges.  Terry also has two adult children: Autumn and Matthew Gomez.
