Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an upcoming slasher horror film, directed by David Blue Garcia, with a screenplay by Chris Thomas Devlin, from a story by Fede Álvarez and Rodolfo Sayagues.[2] Produced by Legendary Pictures, Bad Hombre, and Exurbia Films, it serves as a direct sequel to the 1974 film of the same name, ignoring the events of all other films in the franchise, and the ninth installment overall. It stars Nell Hudson, Elsie Fisher, Jacob Latimore, Moe Dunford, Mark Burnham, Alice Krige, Sarah Yarkin, Jessica Allain, Sam Douglas, William Hope, Jolyon Coy, and Olwen Fouéré.
After the release of Leatherface in 2017, Lionsgate had plans for five more films in the franchise. However, the studio lost the rights due to the time it took to release it. Legendary acquired the franchise's rights, with Álvarez and Sayagues serving as producers alongside Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel, and Kim Henkel who co-wrote the original film. Duo filmmakers Ryan and Andy Tohill were initially signed on as directors, but were replaced with Garcia due to creative differences. Filming took place in Bulgaria in August 2020.

- Nell Hudson as Melody: Melody is a "25-year old San Francisco moneymaker who drags her younger teenage sister with her to Texas on a business trip, out of fear of leaving her alone in the city".[3][4]
- Elsie Fisher as Lila: Melody's teenage sister and an amateur photographer who is wheelchair-bound and "presumably disabled".[3][4]
- Mark Burnham as Leatherface / Kenny: A 60-year old serial killer and characterized as having a big build. He is not a bodybuilder, and may even be slightly obese.[4]
- Olwen Fouéré as Sally Hardesty: The only survivor of the Leatherface's killing spree from the original film. Sally was previously portrayed by Marilyn Burns in the original film, however, Burns died in 2014, resulting in a searching for a new actress to portray the character.[4]
- Alice Krige as Mrs. Mc: An 80-year old and seems to actually be a warm, honest lady who has fostered abandoned children for decades. Despite having a positive outlook, Mrs. Mc is on the verge of being evicted from her rural Texas home.[4]
- Jacob Latimore as Dante: A close friend of Melody and Lila.[3][4]
- Jessica Allain as Dante's girlfriend and a close friend of Melody and Lila.[4]

Development[edit]
Following the release of Leatherface, the producers had the rights to make five more Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. In April 2015, producer Christa Campbell stated that the fate of the potential films would largely depend on the financial reception and perceived fan reactions regarding the 2017 prequel.[5][6] Campbell clarified in December 2017 that Lionsgate and Millennium Films had lost the franchise rights due to the time it took to release it.[7]
Pre-production[edit]
On August 24, 2018, it was reported that Legendary Pictures was interested in purchasing the Texas Chainsaw Massacre license with interest in television and film.[8][9] The following year on September 19 it was revealed that Fede Álvarez will produce the next film.[10][11] In November 2019, Deadline reported that newcomer Chris Thomas Devlin will write the reboot.[12] In Feburary 2020, brothers Ryan Tohill and Andy Tohill were hired to direct the film.[13] In May 2020, it was revealed that the film would serve as a direct sequel to the original 1974 film, ignoring every film that came after and focusing on a 60 year old Leatherface.[14]
Casting[edit]
In October 2020, it was announced that Elsie Fisher had been cast in the film along with Sarah Yarkin, Moe Dunford, Alice Krige, Jacob Latimore, Nell Hudson, Jessica Allain, Sam Douglas, William Hope, and Jolyon Coy.[4] In March 2021, it was revealed that Mark Burnham had been cast as Leatherface, replacing the late Gunnar Hansen, while Olwen Fouéré was cast as Sally Hardesty, replacing the late Marilyn Burns.[15][16]
Filming[edit]
Filming began on August 17, 2020 in Bulgaria. However, due to being unimpressed with what was filmed, Legendary fired Ryan and Andy Tohill, with David Blue Garcia being brought on as the new director. He would also be shooting the film from scratch, as the footage shot by the Tohill brothers would not be used.[3]
Post-production[edit]
By March 2021, Álvarez confirmed that the film would focus on an "old man Leatherface," while also revealing that they took an old school approach to the film, noting vintage lenses and the gore being executed practically. He also revealed that the film had completed around that point.[17][18][19] On April 2021, the film was revealed to be titled Texas Chainsaw Massacre.[20][21] It was rumored at one point that the title had changed to Texas Chainsaw Begins but screenwriter Chris Thomas Devlin denied this.[22]
On May 2021, it was reported that the film was undergoing test screenings with the audience reaction for the film reportedly being negative.[23] However, later in August, Álvarez claimed the overall audience score leaned more positive, while emphasizing that the film remains respectful to the first film's legacy.[24]

On August 2021, it was confirmed that Colin Stetson composed the score for the film.[25]

On October 2020, Legendary launched the official website, with a (motion) poster, as well as a limited time to get an exclusive "Calling Card" for the games Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.[4]
