History[edit]
The Acting Studio-New York was established in November of 1983 by its founding, and still-current studio director, teacher, actor, and producer James Price, who was both a protégé and personal friend of Sanford Meisner.[7] The studio originally operated under the name The Acting Studio, Inc.,[8] and was situated in a commercial loft at 31 West 21st Street in New York, New York, from 1983-1989. The studio later relocated to 29 East 19th Street in New York, New York, from 1989-2000. From 2002-2020, The Acting Studio-New York was in residence at the Shetler Studios Theatre Complex[9], which permanently closed down in April 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.[10]
The Acting Studio-New York has been training actors since its inception in 1983. The application of the skills in work is presented through open-class forums, group projects, and productions presented for public performance.[11] The studio provides students with practical performance experience through the Chelsea Repertory Company, an off-off Broadway theatre company that has produced theatre in conjunction with the studio since 1984.[12][13]
In 2011, The Acting Studio-New York was described as "one of the most excellent schools in New York City" in the book Stagecraft: Stanislavsky and External Acting Techniques: A Companion to Using the Stanislavsky System by Robert Blumenfeld[14].
In 2012, CBS News New York listed The Acting Studio-New York as offering some of "NYC's Best Acting Classes" in which they praised the Studio's work in introducing students to "diction, rhythm, vocal melody [and] imagery" through their Acting Shakespeare Class[15].
In 2016, The Studio's one-year acting conservatory was complimented by Time Out New York magazine, declaring "...it's worth it to go all-in with their one-year acting conservatory if you want to write or star in plays or musicals"[16].
