The African Times USA is a California-based English language magazine published weekly with a focus on Pan-African issues and perspectives.
History[edit]
Established in 1989 by an African American Immigrant Charles Anyiam who has served as its editor since then. The African Times USA is based in Hawthorne, California where its publication are made weekly. Its editorial board is chaired by Tyrone Johnson while Stacy Wright heads its editorial production. [1]
The magazine was born with the aim of covering reports, issues and perspectives in the Pan-African world.
In 1991, It started and organized the Africa Achievement Awards hosted at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Since then, it has honored a handful of notable individuals and organizations. These include Presidents Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela,Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo and Abdoulaye Wade. Other awardees include Stevie Wonder, National Geographic, Nollywood and Ethiopian Airlines [2]
In April 2020, the African Times-USA rebranded itself and moved from being a solely traditional media house to digital publication when it launched a digital portal serving over 250,000 subscribers made up of mainly Africans in diaspora. [3][4]
On 1st June 2023, they were honored by the government of the City of Los Angeles led by Karen Bass for their contributions to America as part of the active Black press in the USA since the last 34 years. [5]
