The Agony are an all-female heavy rock band formed in November 2012 by the founding members Nikola Kandoussi (rhythm guitar / vocals), formerly the guitarist in Czech rock singer Aleš Brichta's band, and Jarka Červeňáková, death metal drummer originally from Košice, Slovakia. [1]
The band struggled to find a good bassist until in February 2013 they finally found Kateřina Sýkorová (performing under stage name 'Katie Skatie' or simply 'Katie'). The three-piece started to rehearse and search for a lead guitarist to complete the band as the previous one, conservatory-educated Karolína Šustová, left the band that didn't play 'her kind of music'. [1]
The band put an ad on the internet and just before the decision to play as a 3-piece for good, they were contacted by Terka Pšenčíková, a 24-year old lead guitar who eventually completed the line-up. [1]
Te Agony then recorded and released their debut EP titled "Loud and Furious" in July 2013. [1]
History[edit]
The release of the band's first EP "Loud and Furious" was accompanied by the first video for the song 'Kick Ass', and mainly 'T.W.S', the band's first major single. The band launched the EP on a gig in the Prague's rock club Kain on 6th September 2013 having special guest Aleš Brichta. [1][2]
s Michal Pavlíček, Veronika 'Supice' Borovková and Miloš Meier
In 2014 Jarka Červeňáková left the band and Martina 'Kajda' Balcarová joined the band as a new drummer. [3] The band supported American drummer Mike Terrana on his tour later in the year. [4]
The band released their first full album called "Dirty and Dangerous" in 2015. The launch gig for the new album followed on 21st October 2015 in club Vagon in Prague with special guests Michal Pavlíček, Veronika 'Supice' Borovková and Miloš Meier.[1][2]
In summer 2017 the Agony released an EP called "Radio Silence". The year after in 2018 the band released their second album "689" gathering resources via a crowd funding campaign. [3] Nikola Kandoussi said that she sees the second album "689" as more structured and heavy. [5] The band recorded the EP in the SONO, studio 2 in Prague.[6] The launch gig for the album was on 20th December 2017 in Vagon club in Prague, Czech Republic with special guests Jakub Ryba, Matěj Homola, Martin Kolinss a Klauda Kryšpín. [6][7]
A release of a single "Loverboy Psycho" followed the album "689" in 2018. The band played the song on a festival Hrady CZ 2017 and used the recoded video for the official clip. [8] As well as on the first album all songs have lyrics in English. [9]
The Agony toured not only in Czech Republic (Masters of Rock, Natruc, Rockfest Dačice, Rock of Sadská, Hrady CZ 2017 & 2018) and visited Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and United Kingdom as well. [9] The band opened gigs for Tři Sestry, Horkýže slíže, Girlshchool, Loudness or Blaze Bayley among others.[2][6]
Music style and influences[edit]
Nikola Kandoussi stated that her influences include Girlschool, Motörhead, Joan Jett, The Runaways. [3][10]
Katie Skatie mentioned that she likes to play her own style, although she's checking other bassist for inspiration (both bassists from Arctic Monkeys, Krist Novoselic or Flea).
Tereza Pšenčíková agreed with Katie, she likes Michal Pavlíček, Jeff Beck or David Gilmour, but she doesn't want to copy anyone else's style.[11]
