El Ayuwoki (also known as "El Hee Hee") is a fictional horror character, creepypasta, and Internet meme that is a parody of American singer Michael Jackson. The character is inspired by an animatronic figure created in honor of the singer and gained widespread popularity in Latin America in early 2019.
History
The origin of the character begins with a video published by YouTube user thomasrengstorff on July 27, 2009, titled "My Ghoul Jackson". The video was dedicated to an animatronic figure created in honor of Michael Jackson during the period of his album "Thriller". The creation attracted the attention of the internet community not only because of the recent death of the singer (June 25, 2009), but also because of the creepy, unnatural appearance of the animatronic. It is believed that the author gave the creation the name "Ayuwoki", which is a distorted pronunciation of the line "Annie, are you okay?" from the song "Smooth Criminal".
Over time, the author continued to publish videos with this figure, and other content creators began to create memes, videos with distorted Jackson music, and "challenges" in the style of "The Ayuwoki Challenge at 3 a.m." based on it. The wave of popularity peaked in February–March 2019, when the character became viral in the Spanish-speaking segment of the internet.
On November 26, 2019, the studio "DeadlyCrow Games" released the video game "Escape the Ayuwoki" on Steam, which further cemented the character's popularity.
Description
According to legend, if a person is awake between 2:20 and 3:00 a.m., a creature known as "Ayuwoki" can enter their home. Before kidnapping or attacking, it emits a characteristic "Hee hee" sound. The exact fate of the victims is unknown, but most often kidnapping, murder, or death from fear is assumed.
There is a summoning ritual: if you place candles in the sink in the bathroom, stand in front of the mirror, lock the door, and repeat its name exactly three times, it will appear. It is believed that the ritual is best performed at 3 a.m.
The character has two main forms:
- El Ayuwoki: Similar to Michael Jackson, with long black hair, yellowish skin, bruises under the eyes, purple lips. Dressed in a black shirt with yellow elements, black pants and shoes, with white gloves on his hands.
- El Hee Hee: A simpler and creepier form. It has pale or yellowish-pale skin, completely black clothing, grotesque feet or a body consisting of a torso and head on two legs.
Origin of the image and research
Unlike Jeff the Killer, whose photograph origin was the subject of lengthy searches on 4chan, the origin of Ayuwoki is clearly documented. The primary source is the video "My Ghoul Jackson" from 2009. Later photographs and screenshots from this video, especially with zoom on the animatronic's face, became the basis for memes and illustrations.
Cultural influence
- The character became part of modern internet culture, especially in Latin American countries, alongside figures such as Slender Man or Momo.
- The release of the video game "Escape the Ayuwoki" in 2019 renewed interest in the character and introduced it to a wider gaming audience.
- There is a misconception that the video went viral immediately after publication, but in fact it gained mass popularity almost 10 years later.
