The Booksellers Murder (Arabic: مقتل بائع الكتب) is a novel written by Iraqi novelist Sa’ad Mohammed Rahim.[1] The novel was first published in 2016 by Dar-Stoor for Publishing and Distribution in Baghdad. It was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction in 2017.[2]

Plot[edit]

This novel tells a story of an experienced journalist "Magid Baghdadi," who is sent on a two-month investigation by an anonymous wealthy influential, to the city of Baqubah, (60 kilometers north of Baghdad). He is required to write a book revealing the life secrets and mysterious death of "Mahmoud al-Marzouq" a 70-year-old artist and book seller.[3] The journalist forms relationships with the deceased's acquaintances and friends, and discovers a book in which al-Marzouq wrote some of his diaries, chronicling city life beginning on the day of the US occupation of Iraq, and discovers a connection between him and "Jeanette" a French woman who worked as a model for artists, with whom he had an intimate relationship, when he was a refugee in Paris. From these sources, and others, the personality of al-Marzouq and the chapters of his complex and interesting life are revealed,.his relationships and friendships with women and men, his political experience in Iraq, and hence in Czechoslovakia, and his escape to France. And the reason of his death will always remain a mystery.[4][5]
