The Boy & The Octopus is a 2024 American short film written and directed by Taika Waititi.[1]

The film is about a young boy making friends with an octopus

Plot

While snorkeling on a seaside vacation. A young boy encounters an octopus in the water. When he comes out to the surface the adventurous mollusk has attached itself to the boy's head with no intention to leave it whatsoever, becoming his friendly passenger, discovering along this ride all things magic about christmas in the human world. Past the initial scare the situation quickly turns into a symbiotic partnership thanks to kindness and curiosity of both parties.

Reception

Shortly after its release, Brian MacNamara of TL;DR Movie Reviews blog praised the film's visual design, with a moving story, while also pointing out its commercial aspect, writing that the film "crammed with product placement to the point of rupture[...] is essentially an advertisement for Disney dressed up as a short film"[2]
