Team Darryl is a 2018 mockumentary style comedy short film directed by Taika Waititi and starring Jeff Goldblum. It is a sequel to the 2016 short film Team Thor and the 2017 sequel Team Thor: Part 2, both directed by Waititi. Goldblum reprises his role as Grandmaster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Daley Pearson returns as his roommate Darryl Jacobson from the first two Team Thor films. Chris Hemsworth makes an appearance as Thor.
Plot[edit]
After Thor moves out of Darryl's apartment, Darryl happens to find a new work position in Los Angeles but when he looks for a housemate he finds that only one person has responded to his adverts: The Grandmaster.
Darryl describes how he eventually realised that The Grandmaster was likely from another planet. A clip is shown of The Grandmaster learning what toast is. The Grandmaster then describes his home planet of Sakaar as well as an assistant that he had named Topaz. He announces that Darryl seems to be the perfect replacement assistant and a few clips are shown with footage of Darryl performing menial tasks for The Grandmaster, such as taking out the trash, driving him around and painting the signature blue paint on The Grandmaster's face.
Darryl goes on to describe how The Grandmaster seems like a good person but has issues understanding Darryl's personal space and has his own anger issues. Clips are shown to reflect this behaviour. The Grandmaster shows off the drawings he has worked on while staying with Darryl. Most of them are of Darryl himself in questionable poses. The Grandmaster then reveals that he plans to take over Earth, posting a video to the internet, threatening those that resist with his "melting stick" which would reduce any person to a messy puddle. However, after receiving no interest from other internet users, he plans to advertise the first video by posting a second video with a musical guest. He hires Darryl's friends to help him but melts one of them, David, when his expectations are not met.
He expresses some remorse at melting David and plans to phone David's parents to break the bad news, but when practicing the conversation with Darryl, he ends up flirting with David's mother for most of the call. The Grandmaster explains that when he takes over the planet, he expects Darryl to stand at his side. Darryl confesses in private that he doesn't trust his new housemate but when The Grandmaster tells Darryl that he loves him, Darryl reluctantly reciprocates. Darryl admits that he misses his old housemate, referring to Thor.[1]
