The Christmas Tree[1] is an 1991 American animated Christmas television special directed and co-produced by Flamarion Ferreira and written by Nels Christianson. Airing on USA Network, this special had only aired once on the network and never aired again. After resurfacing, the special was widely panned by critics and audiences, most notably for its animation, voice acting, story, and editing.

Synopsis[edit]

The film takes place in an orphanage run by the evil Mrs. Mavilda, who steals the orphanage's funds and tricks the mayor into thinking she's a good manager. The kids are so miserable that they latch onto a pine tree as a mother figure and a stray dog as their only friend. Things begin to change when a new family moves into town, and the mayor assigns the mother, Judy, to a position as Mrs. Mavilda's assistant. She and her two children named Pappy and Lily live at the orphanage, while their husband/father Ray must live elsewhere for his new job. Judy takes the orphans under her wing and tries to make life better for them. When Mrs. Mavilda decides to frame Judy for a crime in order to have her removed, the children make a desperate bid to appeal to Santa Claus for help.

Production[edit]

The film was produced by Flamarion Ferreia's animation studio, Flamarion Ferreira Films, which Ferreira co-produced along with Renato Almedia. The film was released directly-to-video on LIVE's Family Home Entertainment. A majority of cast members are siblings with eachother. Elly Drygas, is the daughter of Karen Drygas, Ayal Kleinman, voice of Pappy, is the son of Leana Kleinman, and Michele Becker is the sister of Macki Becker, all acording to IMDb. In addition, this is the only film role for every actor in this film, with the exception of Macki, who was in an episode of Solved in 2010 as herself. Ferreia is not only credited as the director and producer, but also as an animator and character designer.[2] Scott Broberg composed the music and a soundtrack for the film has currently not been released.

Release and reception[edit]

The film had premiered on The USA Network on December 14, 1991. After its broadcast, it was never aired again but was released on VHS from Family Home Entertainment in 1992, and then on DVD by GoodTimes Entertainment in 2003.

As the film resurfaced the internet in the 2010s after being considered lost media for two decades, The Christmas Tree was panned by critics and audiences for its animation, writing, voice acting, and editing. It is widely considered to be one of the worst Christmas specials of all time. It currently holds a 1.4/10 rating on IMDb, having almost the same score as another infamous Christmas special, Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa, which holds a 1.3/10. Additionally, The Christmas Tree gained popularity after YouTube critic Doug Walker (mainly known by his channel name Nostalgia Critic) had reviewed it on his channel and called it the worst Christmas special of all time, until Rapsittie also resurfaced the internet in 2015.[3]
