The Class of '58 are a British rock and roll and doo-wop band from South Wales. Since 2002 the Class has consisted of the immediate Coleman family, Howie Coleman (Father - Lead Guitar and Vocals), Chris Coleman (Mother - Double Bass and Vocals), John Coleman (Eldest Son - Drums and Vocals) and David Coleman (Youngest Son - Piano and Vocals.[1]

Biography[edit]

Originally formed in 1986 by founding member Howie Coleman[2], in Penarth, South Wales, the band found success performing in the United Kingdom and Europe, thanks to the U.K Rock & Roll Revival, in the 1980's. They were signed to renown agent Paul Barrett's stable[3] and in 1990, Howie's wife Chris, joined the band full time. Soon after the band began touring as the European backing band for a number of original 1950's recording stars including Jack Scott[4], with whom they recorded a live album[5], Charlie Gracie[6], Johnny Preston[7], Frankie Ford, Janis Martin[8], DJ Fontana, The Comets, The Crickets, Wanda Jackson[9], Ray Campi[10] and British artists including Freddie 'Fingers' Lee, Lonnie Donnegan and Wee Willie Harris among others. Alongside backing touring artists, they continued to perform in the U.K and Europe in their own right, most commonly as a trio, with various stand in drummers.

This formation of the band continued until early 2002 when long term drummer Dave Coats, Husband of Singer Heather Jones, left to persue other business interests. Eldest son John Coleman, then aged 8, joined The Class of '58 full time on drums shortly after. By the end of 2002 youngest son David Coleman had joined on piano, aged 6. This has been the lineup of the band since then and, particularly in recent years, they've enjoyed good success, garnering a large and dedicated following within the European Rock & Roll scene.[11][12][13][14] They have been credited as being a major early influence in the increase in opportunity given to young musicians in the U.K music industry, particularly within the U.K and European Rock & Roll music scene.

The band continues to tour all over the world.[15] They have and continue to make various appearances on U.K and European T.V and Radio and have released a Live DVD "The Class of '58 : Live in Session"[16] but as yet, despite featuring on a number of compilation albums haven't released an album.

The band are associated with a number of brands; Drummer, John Coleman, is endorsed by Ludwig Drums[17], Murat Diril Cymbals[18] and Code Drum Heads. Double Bass Player, Chris Coleman, is endorsed by Innovation Bass Strings[19]
