The Collective Soul and Unconscious: Chapter One (stylized in all lowercase) is the second Extended Play by the South Korean girl group Billlie.[1] It was released on February 23, 2022 by Mystic Story and distributed by Kakao Entertainment.[2]The physical album is available in two versions as "Soul" and "Unconscious".[3]
Background And Release[edit]
On January 27, 2022, Mystic Story confirmed all the reports that Billlie is preparing for a new and a speedy release , slated for a late-February release.[4] A teaser posted on February 11 revealed the group's second mini album, titled "The Collective Soul and Unconscious: Chapter One" with the title track "GingaMingaYo" will be released on February 23.[5][6] The album was officially released on 23 February.[7] It was scheduled to have a showcase on the day of the release but since 3 members , namely Siyoon , Haram and Tsuki was diagnosed with COVID-19 , the showcase was cancelled.[8][9]
Composition[edit]
The title track 'GingaMingaYo (the strange world)' contains the questions and emotions that he asks himself during the process of becoming an adult.The music video was directed by Zanybros.[10]"GingaMingaYo" was composed in the key of B minor, with a tempo of 122 beats per minute.[11]
Other tracks include ,"a sign ~ anonymous", a broken beat style new jazz track , "overlap(1/1)" an alternative R&B track , "M◐◑N palace" , a post trip-hop track and "Believe" a self-written synth pop track by Billlie. Through this album, Billlie marks the beginning of a journey to complete the two separate narratives of [the Billage of perception] and [the collective soul and the unconscious] in parallel, and through this series, they are able to coexist with the previous works. The reality surrounding the film, as well as episodes in dreams and the unconscious, are expressed with Billlie's unique mise-en-scène.[12]
Theme and Worldview[edit]
GingaMingaYo and other songs in The Collective Soul and Unconscious chapter 01 are about the journey of questioning and exploring adulthood of teenagers and young adults, while figuring what is right and what would bring happiness for themselves. However it’s not easy to find out what they want and need right away, the searching is still continuing. Ambiguity is the overall emotion and atmosphere through the album. The title track GingaMingaYo lyrics express it in a quirky way about the confusion of young people when growing up.
The childish/ childlike settings and atmosphere is the main concept for GingaMingaYo, with many details from outfit to choreography reminiscent of childhood, which fit in the story in What Is Your B and overall lyrics of the album about the inner child that is being forgotten, and the inner conflict when growing up. The melody of GGMGY is inspired from the classic “E-I-E-I-O” in children's song Old MacDonald Had a Farm. In contrast with the cute and quirky childlike concept, the cinematography of What Is Your B and GingaMingaYo use a lot of references from horror movies, the combination created a Spooky atmosphere that surprises the audience and makes them even more confused and curious.
The album covers of 2 versions Soul and Unconscious show the mirrored versions of the Hotel in The Strange World, which is speculated to be inspired from the novel The Midnight Library’s cover, along with the interior appeared in GingaMingaYo inspired by Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shining’s Overlook hotel.
Commercial Performance[edit]
The album debuted at number 5 on Gaon Album Chart on the issue dated February 20 to February 26.[13]They sold 9,023 copies in its first day of release , making it their highest so far. The album also sold 28,675 copies in their first week as well.[14]They ranked first in the real-time chart on the Hanteo Chart on 1st March, the deadline for the initial Chodong. Previously, the music video of the title song 'GingaMingaYo (the strange world)' had more than 20 million views, surpassing the previous records of 'RING X RING' and 'Snowy Night'. have passed Billlie's album sales and global popularity, and were recorded in 21 regions, including No. 1 in 5 regions on iTunes Top Albums and Single Charts, and world ranking charts , such as entering the World Wide and European iTunes album charts. The Collective Soul and Unconscious: Chapter One Original Soundtrack from "What is your B? (stylized in all lowercase) is the first OST album by Billlie. It was released on March 1st , 2022 with "A Sign ~ Overture to Billie" serving as the album's title track.
The album contains the original soundtracks used in "What is your B?", which was released as a supporting documentary film for this mini album. The Jazz, alternative, R&B, trip hop, synth pop based album was opened to downloading and streaming services.[18]
