Development[edit]

In May 2017, Safran stated that the Crooked Man was being considered by the studio, for a feature film.[1] By June of the same year, it was reported that a spin-off film titled The Crooked Man, featuring the character of the same name from The Conjuring 2, was in development with Mike Van Waes writing the script based on a story treatment by James Wan. Wan and Safran are set to produce the project. Wan later told Entertainment Weekly that The Crooked Man is in the early stages of development and that the intent with the movie is to develop a "dark fairytale" sub-genre of horror films.[2]

By September 2018, Safran gave an update on the project stating that the script was in progress of being written and that the studio intends to wait until the story is fully developed before production will begin. He further explained that the intention is for each of the different films in the franchise to have its own style.[3]

In April 2019, Safran gave another update on the project. He explained that the film was put on hold in favour of The Nun. "There are a bunch of things that we're exploring in Annabelle Comes Home that I just love. That I think are going to be great. Frequently, the audience tells you what the next one should be. When we did Conjuring 2, we all thought The Crooked Man would be the next one out the gate. We just loved it. It was just a great character. Instead, the audience was so fascinated by the nun." He went on to state that "it's not that we won't do The Crooked Man, but you kind of have to balance out [the franchise]. I'm sure that we have ideas of what we want to do beyond this, from the artifact room, but I suspect that we'll probably... The audience will tell us exactly what we should be doing."[4]

In November 2019, Javier Botet, the actor who portrayed the Crooked Man in The Conjuring 2, commented on the project, saying that he was unsure when it would happen. "They wrote the screenplay and they are waiting at the moment. They want to do it, but ... [w]e don't know when it's going to happen."[5]
