The Earth Prize is an environmental sustainability prize for secondary education students awarded by The Earth Foundation every year.[1] The Earth Prize was first launched on September 1st, 2021 and awarded on March 25th, 2022 at The Earth Prize Awards Ceremony.[2] The winner receives USD 100,000, to be shared between the team members and their school or educational program.[3] Three runner-up finalists are rewarded with USD 25,000 each for their schools or educational programs. [4][5] An educator and mentor participating in the competition are also recognized with a USD 12,500 award each.
Background
The Earth Prize was originally conceived and organized by the World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) network, led by Professor Mario Salomone, in collaboration with the Municipality of Luino on Lake Maggiore, Italy.[6] From 2018 until 2020, the prize was awarded to individuals, organizations, and projects that protected and enhanced landscapes and environmental resources.[7]
At the end of 2020, The Earth Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland took responsibility for the prize and transformed it into a global environmental sustainability competition for students between the ages of 13 and 19 in which participants propose ideas to solve different environmental problems.
