The Face Shop
The Face Shop (Hangul: 더페이스샵) is a South Korean cosmetics company and a subsidiary of LG Household & Health Care. It records the highest sales among South Korea’s road shop cosmetic brands.[1]
The company was founded in 1962 under the name Miju Industrial Co., Ltd. In 1984, it acquired Bompia Cosmetics, which had a technical partnership with Japan’s Menard Cosmetics, and handled both domestic sales and exports. In 1995, after the termination of its technical partnership with Menard Cosmetics, the company shifted its focus to OEM production.[2]
In 1999, Miju Industrial Co., Ltd. changed its name to Korea Maricos Cosmetics, and in 2003, it adopted its current name, The Face Shop. In 2005, Hong Kong-based private equity firm Affinity Equity Partners acquired a 70% stake from the founder and current chairman, Jung Woon-ho. Although negotiations were later held with the U.S. private equity firm The Carlyle Group for a potential sale[3], on March 17, 2009, LG Household & Health Care announced that it had completed the acquisition of The Face Shop by signing an agreement to purchase 90% of the company’s shares — consisting of a 70.2% stake held by the largest shareholder, Shepherd Detachering B.V., and a 19.8% stake held by founder Jung Woon-ho.[4]
In 2011, The Face Shop merged with VOV Cosmetics.[5]
