LG AI Research is a subsidiary of the LG Group in South Korea.[1][2] It's a collaboration partnered with Google Cloud[3][4] to develop EXAONE 3.0 generative AI models,[5][6][7] and ChatEXAONE.[8][9]
History
LG AI Research was launched in December 2021.[5][9] In 2021, the company announced its first version of EXAONE.[5][8][9][10] In 2023, the company stated that the language model reduced costs by 78% by making inference faster and using memory more efficiently and multimodal model used more memory to improve content quality while significantly increasing inference speed, leading to a 66% cost reduction..[11]
LG AI Research launched EXAONE 3.0 in August 2024, a bilingual model capable of understanding and processing both Korean and English.[8][12]
In November 2023, LG AI Research signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with UNESCO at LG Science Park in Seoul[13] to implement and promote the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.[14] [15]This partnership aims to increase knowledge and awareness of AI ethics. In May 2024, LG AI Research and UNESCO signed an agreement to collaborate on a global AI ethics MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) project.[15][16] In March 2024, LG AI collaborated with The Jackson Laboratcollaborated ry (JAX).[17] In December 2024, LG launched Exaone 3.5 32B model, which rivals DeepSeek.[18][19]
