The Greatest Books is a website that ranks the best books in literature based on a combination of 200 (currently) different book lists from various sources. It uses a specialized algorithm to calculate the scores and rankings of each book. The website also allows users to filter the books by genre, language, period, and author.[1]

History[edit]

The website was created by Shane Sherman and launched in 2009.[2]

Methodology[edit]

The Greatest Books uses a specialized algorithm that assigns a score to each book based on its appearance and ranking in 200 different book lists from various sources. The sources include literary awards, such as the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Booker Prize; polls and surveys, such as the Modern Library 100 Best Novels, the BBC's Big Read, and the World Library; and bestseller lists, such as the New York Times Best Seller list, the Amazon.com Best Books of the Year, and the Publishers Weekly Best Books. The algorithm also takes into account the number of votes, the legitimacy of sources, and the recency of the lists. The algorithm then ranks the books according to their scores, from highest to lowest. The website updates the ranking often and new lists are added still.[3]

Features[edit]

The Greatest Books allows users to browse and filter the books by various criteria, such as genre, language, period, and author. The website currently lists over a thousand books and some can be divided into genres such as: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, biography, memoir, history, philosophy, science, and children's literature. The website also lists books in many languages, from English to French. The website also allows users to select a time period, from ancient to contemporary, and see the books published in that era. The website also features a search function, where users can enter the title, author, or keyword of a book and find it in the list. The website also shows the sources and lists that the book appeared in, and the score and ranking that the book received.[4]

Impact[edit]

The Greatest Books has been cited by many websites in lists of their own as a reference for the greatest books.[5][6][7] The sites lists has also been referenced at points on many other sites as a reference to specific lists.[8] [9][10] [11] [12]
