Story[edit]

Kapuas River in the past

Long ago, there lived a fisherman with his family in Sintang, West Kalimantan. The fisherman was very poor. He would sell the fishes he caught, but on some days, he could not catch any fishes.

On one sunny morning, like usual, the fisherman sat on his canoe and rowed towards a great fishing spot in the river. He brought out his fishing rod and dropped the bait into the river. He kept waiting and waiting, but he couldn't catch a fish. He changed the bait and threw it back into the river. After waiting for a long time, he still couldn't catch a single fish. Suddenly, he felt something pulling his fishing rod.

“Aha! I finally caught a fish!” the fisherman shouted. He started pulling the string of his fishing rod. “Wow! it looks like a big fish!” he said with excitement. He thought it was a big fish because he found it difficult to pull the string. He realised that if he caught this big fish, he could sell it at a very high price.

After thinking about the money he could get, he was motivated to pull the string even harder. He kept pulling with so much power, but he still couldn't catch the fish. He used so much of his energy which led to him being tired. So, he decided to take a short nap so that when he would wake up, he would have more energy to pull the string.

When he woke up, it was almost dark. He hoped that during the time he slept, the fish had gotten weak.

He took a deep breath and counted, one..two..three! Using all of his might, he pulled the string. He succeeded in lifting his fishing rod! When he looked carefully, he realised that he didn't catch a fish. Instead, he found a wire. The wire looked like it was made of gold. He thought that if he could sell the gold wire, he could get a lot of money. He continued pulling and pulling more wire into his canoe.

Suddenly, he heard someone's voice. “Stop, do not take any more wire”. The fisherman ignored the voice and continued pulling.

“Enough! Don’t take the wire anymore. Stop now!” the voice said again. “No! I won’t stop!” shouted the fisherman.

As he continued pulling the wire, he didn't realise that the canoe was completely filled with the gold wire. It was too heavy for the canoe. The more wire he pulled, the more the canoe sank.

Then, the canoe completely submerged and he realised what he did to himself. He couldn't save a single wire and he swam towards the bank of the river. He regretted being too greedy.

His story was spread amongst people near and far. Since then, the river was named Sungai Kawat (the Wire River).

Moral[edit]

Avoid being greedy, especially when it involves money. Greed makes a person want more for themselves and the wellbeing of others and his are ignored.
