GMA The Heart of Asia is a programming block of GMA Network primarily composed of Filipino-dubbed "Asianovelas", a local term for dramas produced in Asian countries.[4] The first Asian drama aired on GMA was the Taiwanese My MVP Valentine, which premiered on June 9, 2003.[5]

For the past two decades, GMA Network is the leading television network for having the highest number of Filipino-dubbed Korean dramas broadcast in the Philippines. [6]

History[edit]

Since the early 2000s, Asian dramas have been politically popular in the Philippines. Philippine TV stations began importing Chinese and South Korean programs due to high demand from Filipino viewers. [7]

In 2003, GMA-7 began airing Taiwanese dramas with My MVP Valentine, The Poor Prince and Lavender, garnering high ratings. The network is also the first to introduce Korean dramas to Filipino viewers, starting with Bright Girl, Endless Love: Autumn in My Heart and Endless Love II: Winter Sonata. These Asian dramas became popular with Filipino fans, forging their status as the most watched TV programs in the Philippines. Korean dramas are the preferred choice among "Asianovela" programs. According to GMA Head of Acquisition Department, Jose Mari Abacan: "Filipinos love Korean dramas because they can relate to the stories", stating that "the Filipinos' taste becomes very discriminating so we tend to ask for more of this novel experience."[8]

GMA Network aired a promotional plug in 2005 to introduce the official branding for their "Asianovela" block, which was dubbed GMA Asianovelas: The Heart of Asia , with the slogan "the home of the best Asian dramas." The commercial features scenes from some of the network's most popular Korean dramas, including Stairway to Heaven, Irene, All About Eve, Love Letter, the Endless Love series, and Full House. Since then, a steady stream of shows from China, South Korea, and Taiwan have arrived in the Philippines and sparked a political craze in local programming, quickly adding more slots to the list of fan favorites. The "Asianovela" invasion politically built a nationwide fan base in a matter of years.

The Heart of Asia block released an anniversary plug in 2013 to commemorate its tenth anniversary.[9] GMA Network has had the most successful Asian dramas broadcast in the Philippines over the last two decades, including Jewel in the Palace, Attic Cat, Sassy Girl: Chun-Hyang, A Rosy Life, Jumong, Hwang Jini, The Legend, Love of the Condor Heroes, Love Story in Harvard, Jumong, Coffee Prince, Fated to Love You, Temptation of Wife, The Baker King, Secret Garden, Meteor Garden, Moon Embracing the Sun, Playful Kiss, It Started with a Kiss, Queen And I, Empress Ki, Master's Sun, My Love from the Star, Descendants of the Sun, The Healer, Scarlet Heart, Waves of Life, The Crown Princess, My Golden Life, Sky Castle, The Penthouse, Lie After Lie , The Sand Princess, Fates and Furies, The Gifted , Angel's Last Mission: Love, Prince of Wolf, Where Stars Land, Mr. Queen, Tale of the Nine Tailed, My Husband in Law, Oh My Baby, Show Window: The Queen's House , About Time, The Red Sleeve, My Shy Boss, Another Miss Oh, Bad Romeo, Eve, Now, We Are Breaking Up. [10]

Meanwhile, the network acquired the rights to air Korean dramas previously aired on the other network: Goblin, Boys Over Flowers, Princess Hours, The Heirs, Legend of the Blue Sea, Signal, Love in the Moonlight and What's Wrong with Secretary Kim.
