The Hike is a 2021 comedy horror film directed by Luke Walker and Vinnie Vineyard, and written by Walker, Vineyard and Kandi Thompson. Vinnie Vineyard and Kandi Thompson play a couple going on a hike in the Great Smoky Mountains. Along the way they run into a trio of strangers and eventually the Cherokee legend of Spearfinger. The story is based on several true events: Vineyard's brother John's hiking misadventures.[1], real life run ins with furries, weird pro wrestlers, Elvis impersonators and even THE Charlie Hodge from Walker and Vineyard's days as Pro Wrestlers and entertainers[2]. The four main actors (Walker, Vineyard, Graves, and Thompson) star in ASY TV's Wrestling With Ghosts. Their investigation in season 3's premiere was in Bryson City, investigating Spearfinger. What they found on the episode influenced several moments in the movie.

The film premiered on Amazon Prime on June 19th, 2021[3]

Production[edit]

The production started during the Covid-19 pandemic. Big N Funky Productions' Luke Walker and Vinnie Vineyard saw an opportunity and decided to make a low budget horror movie during the pandemic when Hollywood was shut down. The production company previously focused on paranormal television, comedy skits, and wrestling television so this was their first feature film.[4]

Walker wrote the initial script, but the tone of the movie changed when Vineyard was cast as the co-lead replacing Travis Graves due to scheduling conflicts. His comedic delivery of lines and real life hatred of the woods turned the movie into a horror/comedy[5]. Kandi Thompson wrote several scenes pertaining to her character, including changing the end of the movie where Spearfinger takes over her body to feed on the dead's livers.

The Smoky Mountain Chronicles[edit]

After the completion of the film and the positive reaction of viewers at a few small screenings during the pandemic, Vineyard and Walker then decided to make a total of six fables about the Great Smoky Mountains [17]. Every movie would be located in the Great Smoky Mountain region, have a moral, something anthropomorphic, and would be based on legends, true stories, or characteristics of each locale. Planned is a comedy/ horror movie based in La Follette, Tennessee entitled WJHC AM about Y2K and the return of Christ, a horror movie based in Bristol, Virginia about demons taking over the world through the eyes of a boy entitled Camp Smokey, and movies based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Unicoi County, Tennessee, and Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
