History[edit]

The Juggernaut was founded as a free newsletter called InkMango in 2017 by Snigdha Sur.[2] InkMango was part of the Y Combinator Spring 2019 cohort in November 2018 and received $150,000 in funding.[3] During the accelerator, the team pivoted to not just aggregate news with its free newsletter, but also to publish original reporting.

In February 2019, the team launched The Juggernaut, a paid subscription service.[3][4]

The Juggernaut raised a seed round led by Precursor Ventures, with participation from New Media Ventures, Old Town Media, Backstage Capital, and Unpopular Ventures. Angel investors include Amish Jani, co-founder at FirstMark Capital; Kevin Lin, co-founder of Twitch; Holly Liu, co-founder of Kabam; Adam Hansmann, co-founder of The Athletic; Albert Ni, early executive at Dropbox; Bhaskar Ghosh, partner and CTO at 8VC; Saran Chari, CTO of Lumosity; Eric Glyman, co-founder of Ramp; Nicky Goulimis, co-founder of Nova Credit; and Jamie Seltzer, co-founder of LightShed Ventures.[5]

The Juggernaut reported growing paid subscribers 20% to 30% month-over-month in 2020.[6]

In 2020, The Juggernaut partnered with The Guardian to report on South Asian campaign organizing efforts in the 2020 elections. In 2019, CNBC named The Juggernaut as one of the top 100 upstarts, companies on their way to becoming household names.[1] In 2020, Business Insider named The Juggernaut as one of the top media startups to watch. In 2021, The Juggernaut partnered with FiveThirtyEight to report on South Asian campaign financing and started a Clubhouse show on Bollywood. The same year, the company joined Facebook’s News Accelerator program.

The Juggernaut aims to report South Asian stories with depth and nuance as well as provide its subscribers with a community. The Juggernaut covers South Asian news from diaspora communities in the United States, Canada, U.K., Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and more. The publication also reports on global news from South Asian countries, including India Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal Bhutan, the Maldives, Afghanistan, and Myanmar.[7] The Juggernaut covers stories on various topics, including culture, politics, food, technology, business, science, and sports. During the 2020 elections, The Juggernaut reported on the appointment of the first Indian American Vice President, and the reasons behind the mixed opinions about Kamala Harris among Gen Z voters. The Juggernaut has interviewed various influential South Asians, including Prabal Gurung, Padma Lakshmi, Riz Ahmed, Mira Nair, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Sarita Choudhury, Pramila Jayapal, Amitav Ghosh, Fatima Bhutto, Richa Moorjani, Aparna Shewakramani, Ravi Patel, Aneesh Chaganty, Shahana Goswami, Vikramaditya Motwane, Neeraj Ghaywan, Nisha Ganatra, and Fatimah Asghar. In 2021, The Juggernaut launched a beta iOS app and crosswords.

The Juggernaut has also hosted both offline and online events, including on Instagram Live.

The Juggernaut’s mission is to diversify storytelling and news. Over 50% of its investment by value was from investors of color. Over 90% of The Juggernaut's writers are people of color, and over 80% are women.[8]
