The Key is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter Matt Goss.[1]. It was released in 1995 by Polydor in Europe[2] and Japan[3] with a UK release in April 1996[4][5]. The album launched the hit singles "The Key"[6][7] and "If You Were Here Tonight"[8][9][10][11] which became national Top 40 hits in the UK[12][13][14][15]. The Key was also remixed by Italian producer Joe T Vannelli[16] and was number one in the Italian dance charts[17][18] which was added as the final track of the album. A scheduled single "Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away"[19] was due for release however replaced by "If You Were Here Tonight" after Matt did a live performance on radio[20] which charted at number 23 in the UK charts[21]. As the studio version was recorded late "If You Were Here Tonight" only appears on the UK version of the release[22]. The album was primarily recorded in LA with "House of Accused" notably at Prince's Paisley Park.[23][20]

Alongside the Paisley Park connection other notable musicians worked exclusively on this album such as David Z who did Kiss for Prince, the bass player on Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing, David Williams who played on Michael Jackson's Off the Wall album. Matt was also the only solo artist Bruce Swedien worked with on this album who wrote Jam for Michael Jackson and mixed every Michael Jackson record.[24]

Abraham DeBaser4/5 stars[25]

Notable comments from reviewer Abraham Debaser were - "Color Blue" ("When you are sleeping, I get healing") is a refined story of the quiet that sleep can give to those who has a life full of torments, just in time to return to hunt demons and immediately be reborn in "Take The Demon" ("Groove on, extend your dreams, revenge is what Illness needs. Groove on, and feel the soul. Take your hate, revenge your fears and let it go"). Finally he begins to deal in the stormy "Hard Being Friends" ("It's hard being friends when the flame of love still burns"). Already because, just in order not to miss anything, in the chaos his girlfriend had also left him. Finally, two covers gracefully supporting a tormented and too mature project in some respects, the very delicate "Heaven Is Ten Zillion Light Years Away" by the idol Steve Wonder and "If You Were Here Tonight" by Alexander O'Neal which will guarantee a new entry into the British top 20.[26]
