The London Forum of Amenity and Civic Societies ("The London Forum")[edit]

The London Forum represents the views and interests of its membership of over 100 amenity and civic societies based across London. The London Forum's main focus is on Planning, Development Management, Heritage, Transport, Environment, Waterways and Open Spaces.[1]

The London Forum will occasionally lead or participate in campaigns on key issues affecting London, but usually supports its members by arranging seminars and engaging with decision makers on their behalf. Frequently this includes participating in meetings, consultations and enquiries held by the Mayor of London, The Greater London Authority, Transport for London, London Councils and other London-wide bodies and campaign groups. Sometimes it includes engaging with departments and agencies of the UK government when they examine issues relevant to London and The London Forum maintains cross-party relationships with several of London's elected Members of Parliament.

Important consultation responses are publicly available through The London Forum's website[2] but subscribing members, which also includes associates and individuals, are kept up to date with key activities and matters of interest using regular e-bulletins and through periodic face to face meetings.

As the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson hosted a reception at London's City Hall to celebrate The London Forum's 25th anniversary on July 17, 2013[3] where he paid tribute to The London Forum and its constituent members, because of the work done all over London by societies and amenity groups in preserving and enhancing their areas.[4]

Constitution[edit]

The London Forum was originally established by the Civic Trust in 1988 to represent communities across London and is now registered as a charity with the UK Charities Commission (charity number 1093134 [5]). Its founder President was Walter Bor, CBE[6][7], who is recognised for developing masterplans for London's East End and several towns and cities across the world. Ben Derbyshire, a former president of Royal Institute of British Architects, is the current President of The London Forum.

Day to day activities are managed by Trustees, each of whom is nominated by a member society, and they are formally appointed by a vote of the members at an Annual General Meeting.

The London Forum is governed by its constitution[8] originally adopted in 2001, revised in 2004 and in 2017 [9] and its more specific objects can be summarised as promoting and encouraging:

  • high standards of planning, urban design, landscaping, infrastructure and transport;
  • conservation, including conserving the individual character of localities;
  • improvement of the built environment, open spaces, waterways and amenities, and avoidance or removal of unsightly or undesirable features;
  • knowledge of and interest in such matters on the part of the general public and particular groups;
  • civic pride and community involvement;
  • sustainable development.

In pursuing these objects, the London Forum is enjoined to 'promote and encourage the activities of local amenity societies and act in a representative capacity on their behalf on amenity and environmental issues affecting Greater London'.
