History

Majority (officially registered as the Majority Party) is a left-wing political party and social movement in the United Kingdom, primarily active in the North East of England. The party was registered with the Electoral Commission on 16 December 2024 (ID: PP18312) and formally launched on 14 April 2025 by Jamie Driscoll, the former Mayor of the North of Tyne.

The party emerged from the infrastructure of Driscoll’s 2024 independent mayoral campaign. It was designed to provide a "permanent home" for socialists and environmentalists who felt disenfranchised by the Labour Party's shift toward the centre-right under Keir Starmer.

Electoral history

2025 Local Elections

In the May 2025 local elections, Majority focused its resources on the Tyneside area. The party successfully elected six councillors across Newcastle City Council and Gateshead Council, running on a platform of "insourcing" municipal services and establishing a Regional Wealth Fund.

2026 Local Elections and Progressive Alliance

In late 2025, Majority entered into a strategic pact with the Green Party of England and Wales. Following internal disputes within the broader left-wing "Your Party" project, Jamie Driscoll formally joined the Green Party in December 2025. However, the Majority Party remains a separate legal entity used to endorse "Progressive Alliance" candidates who do not wish to join a national party. For the May 2026 elections, Majority is fielding 8 candidates in wards where the Greens have stepped aside.

Ideology and policies

Majority advocates for a model of "radical regionalism." Its core policies include:

  • Community Wealth Building: A "Preston-style" model requiring local anchors (hospitals, universities) to spend their budgets with local cooperatives.
  • Public Transport Control: The full re-regulation of bus services and the creation of a "Northern Pass" for low-income residents.
  • Democratic Sortition: The use of randomly selected Citizens' Assemblies to determine regional infrastructure priorities.
  • Green Industrial Strategy: Direct public investment in offshore wind and green hydrogen manufacturing in Sunderland and Blyth.

Leadership and structure

The party maintains a "flat" organizational structure, though it is required to name officers for regulatory compliance.
