The Meltese Dodo is a history of climate change science told through a loose parody of The Maltese Falcon. Its author, Michael Hurwicz, is also President of Irthlingz Art-Based Environmental Education [1].

Contents[edit]

As with its namesake, The Maltese Falcon, the story starts when a beautiful femme fatale (Homo sapiens) shows up at the office of the hardboiled detective (The Earth), pleading for help. An "evil genius mass serial killer" -- The Environment -- is out to get her. "Someone's been putting the heat on him," she says, "and he's coming after me for it." There's something very suspicious-sounding about the whole story. But she's got those "[b]ig, sparkling, sad, intelligent eyes. The kind of species you'd hate to lose." He takes the case.

Reviews[edit]

The Meltese Dodo was reviewed as follows for the National Science Teachers Association by Nicolette Cagle [3], Lecturer in Environmental Science and Policy, and Director of the Environmental Science Summer Program at Duke University:

The Meltese Dodo, by Michael Hurwicz, is a quirky detective story with an environmental twist. The book provides a creative way to introduce students to global environmental concepts (e.g., climate change). This book would be appropriate as an independent reading assignment, supplemented by an introduction to the scientific concepts associated with the book and followed up with group discussions and debates. [4]

The NSTA recommends The Meltese Dodo for grade levels 6-12.
