The Mile End Ladies String Auxiliary is an experimental strings trio from Montréal, made up of cellist Beckie Foon, violist Geneviève Heistek, and violinist Sophie Trudeau.[1][2] They released their debut album, From Cells of Roughest Air, in 2005.[1]

Background[edit]

The Mile End Ladies String Auxiliary was formed by three musicians considered "the pre-eminent Montreal ladies of the stringed instruments".[3] All of them have been involved in a variety of other projects: Foon has played with Esmerine, Fifths of Seven, Set Fire to Flames, and Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra; Heistek has played with Hangedup, Pest 5000,[4] Sackville; and Trudeau has played with Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Kiss Me Deadly, and Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra They performed at the 2005 Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival.[5]

From Cells of Roughest Air[edit]

The trio's debut album, From Cells of Roughest Air, was released on January 1, 2005 on Bangor Records,[1] a label founded by Trudeau.[6] It received a positive review from Chris Whibbs of Exclaim!, who called the project an "absolutely lovely idea".[3]
