The Mystery of Easter Island is a historical fiction podcast that follows the expedition of Katherine Routledge and her husband, William Scoresby to Easter Island. The podcast is based on the true story and autobiographical book of the same name written by Katherine Routledge.
Production[edit]
The show was produced by Footsteps Media. Justin Glanville decided to choose the story while travelling to Easter Island for a vacation. He was surprised that such an interesting historical figure only received a small entry on a guidebook he read on the plane ride to the island. After returning from the trip to Easter Island Glanville researched the topic and contacted Mindy Childress Herman and Obediya Jones-Darrell. Some of the show was recorded in Glanville's dining room while other parts were recorded live in front of an audience at the Cleveland Public Theatre.[1] The show was produced in partnership with Cleveland Public Theatre.[2] The COVID-19 pandemic forced them to record the last two episodes of the first season using Zoom on their smartphones. A second season is expected to pick up chronologically where the first ended, but as of June 2020 production on the second season had not begun. Obediya Jones-Darrell, the 2019-2020 CPT Kulas Theatre Composer Fellow, produced an original music score for the project, which is included among the several layers of dialogue and sound effects.[1][3] Justin Glanville and Mindy Childress Herman are known in Cleveland for their creative projects and had previously worked together to produce an audio drama podcast called Munchen, Minnesota.[4]
Premise[edit]
The Mystery of Easter Island is based on the true story of the 20th-century explorer and ethnographer Katherine Routledge. Katherine and her husband, William Scoresby, travel from England to Easter Island in 1914 to learn why the Moai were built and why they were knocked down. The story is set during World War I, which leads to German warships raiding the island. The story focuses on the gender roles imposed on Katherine Routledge and follows her romantic life as well as her struggle with mental illness and schizophrenia.[5][6]
