The Noname (or No Name) is a punk rock band from Xi'an, China led by lead singer Ray Yao, established on December 31, 2001. Combining 80's punk rock and hardcore into a rhythmic and energetic sound, the band has released four studio albums and toured in Europe and the United States several times.
History
Early years (1997–2001)
The band’s lead singer and creative core, Ray Yao, performed in Xi'an City for 20+ years, forming his first band "Angry Onlookers" in 1998. In early 1999, the band was renamed “EvilHeart”. At the end of 2001, EvilHeart became The Noname.[1]
Early releases and Xi'An Punk Era (2002–2006)
At the end of 2003, the band was signed to Xi’an independent label "Time Recording" and released the song "No Name". The only official single by EvilHeart was also included. In July 2004, the band released their debut EP We Don't Need That Shit!!!. [2]. Afterwards, the band toured six major cities in China. In 2005, the "Next Generation" compilation released by Korea’s ChaosClass Records included two of The Noname’s singles.
In early 2006 the band recorded and released their second EP Get Free [3].
In November 2006, The Noname signed a contract with the German punk label Razorblade Music [4].
Live In Beijing (2007–2013)
In 2007, Yao moved to Beijing, and The Noname gained popularity rapidly. In May, as China's first Old School punk band, it signed a contract with the famous domestic label "Modern Sky". [5]. After that, People's Records from Japan re-released the Noname's first album《Sick And Tired...》[6].
In early 2009, a split EP was released together with The Scarred from America PUNKCORE.
In May 2009, The band was a tour guest for the British band SHAM 69's Chinese tour of[7] and received full sponsorship support from Umbro. During the same year, Sugar Coated Culture and Kids-Union Records jointly released a new EP "Who Will Survive".
In 2010, the Noname performed at Midi Festival with Sham 69 again[8], and the band started their UK tour.[9]
In 2011, the band launched a split EP of The Noname/Dancers/Fire Panda, the two other bands also being from Sugar Coated Culture and Kids-Union Records.[10]
Stagnation and Ray Noname Solo (2014–2018)
The band returned to Xi'an from 2014 to 2017, temporarily suspending all activities.
From the end of 2017 to the beginning of 2018, Ray Yao released EP In Your Heart, which was spread by word of mouth.

Rebirth and Fight Back (2019–Present)
In October 2020, the band released a tribute single Bad Moon Rising, and in December released a new single Get Free. 2021 was the 20th anniversary of the band. The German label Smith & Miller Records released Best Of 2001-2021 / 20th Anniversary in Europe during June 2021. The release is an LP double vinyl (color plastic) & digital album. There are limited Chinese & American releases by Kids-Union Records for China/Asia, and Mordam Music distribution for North America. The album cover and surrounding design work was jointly created by acclaimed German designer CorMania and the lead singer of the famous Berlin punk rock band Bad Co. Project [1]. In July 2021, The Band released New Single No Weed with Music Video. At the end of 2021, The Noname released a Split 7" Ep Boston to Xi’an with American band Big D and The Kids Table Big D and the Kids Table. The band released a new music video of the song "Godsend 303", the guest saxophonist and producer being Matt Appleton of Reel Big Fish Reel Big Fish.
