The Obelisk is an American online music magazine dedicated to hard rock and heavy metal news, band interviews and album reviews.[1][2][3] It was founded in January 2009, by JJ Koczan, former managing editor of The Aquarian Weekly,[4][5] associate editor of Metal Maniacs,[1][6] and disc jockey at Seton Hall University's radio station, WSOU.[7][8][9] Koczan has also contributed to such publications as Creem,[10] BrooklynVegan,[11][12] and StonerRock.com,[13] and was the editor of Roadburn Festival's official magazine, the Weirdo Canyon Dispatch.[12][2]

The webzine has covered an extensive range of heavy metal and hard rock music over the years, but generally focuses on doom metal, sludge metal, stoner metal, stoner rock and desert rock.[3][14][15] It has also featured guest articles from such musicians as Mario Lalli (from Queens of the Stone Age, Yawning Man, Fatso Jetson and Ten East), Ben Ward (from Orange Goblin),[16] Tommy Southard (from Godspeed and Solace), Ben Hogg (from Birds of Prey) and Tim Catz (from Roadsaw).[17][18][19]

Articles from the magazine have been quoted, re-published or cited in such publications as Rolling Stone,[20] Vice,[21] Decibel,[22] Blabbermouth,[23] Classic Rock,[24] MetalSucks,[25] The Baltimore Sun,[26] The Idaho Press,[27] BrooklynVegan,[28] Invisible Oranges,[29] CVLT Nation,[30] Metal Hammer,[31] Under the Radar,[32] Boise Weekly,[33] River Cities' Reader,[34] Side Stage Magazine,[35] Folk Radio UK,[36] and The Rockpit.[37]
