The Oxford Companion to British History is a comprehensive reference book that was first published in 1997. Edited by the late John Cannon and Robert Crowcroft, with the input of over 100 distinguished contributors, the book provides detailed information and analysis on the people and events that have shaped and defined life in Britain over more than 2,000 years.[1] The Oxford Companion to British History has more than 4500 entries.[1]

The book covers a wide range of topics, from social and political history to military, cultural, economic, scientific, and feminist perspectives. In addition to the usual entries on monarchs, battles, and political events, the book also includes dozens of entries on the broader aspects of British history.[1]

To keep the book relevant and current, new entries have been added on topics such as the alternative vote, the financial crisis, the Olympics in Britain, and the Scottish Independence Referendum. Appendices at the end of the book include maps and genealogies, as well as a subject index to help readers find specific information quickly and easily.[1]
