The Phonic Athletic, (2006–2009) were a four-piece Dublin-based alternative rock band. The band played regularly in Dublin venues such as The Button Factory, Temple Bar (2008). All the members were from Wexford, Ireland except Aaron Davies-Jones, who is from Northamptonshire, England.
History
The band was formed by guitarist Philip White and bass player Aaron Davies-Jones in 2006 after starting out together in a former band in early 2005. The first lead vocalist was Lindsay Hamilton, who met Phillip White and Aaron Davies-Jones in art college (National College of Art & Design), Dublin. Colin Maher (drummer) joined the band in the summer of 2007 when the band recorded their first gig in the Halfway House, Murritstown, Co. Wexford, on 25 August supporting another Wexford band, Roulette. After musical differences with Lindsay Hamilton, the band decided to part with the vocalist and spent eight months as an instrumental band; this is where the band got their distinctive look from fashion designer and stylist Clare Geraghty. Brendan Millar joined the band in September 2008, and the first performance including Brendan Millar on vocals was on 30 November 2008 in the Tivoli Theatre, Dublin.
The band won the NCAD battle of the bands and went on to win the Intervarsity Battle of The Bands held in DCU, where they competed against bands from TCD, NUIG, AIT, and DCU. A blog written by one of the judges states "their live act is nothing short of brilliant… They were original, fun and most importantly, they are all solid musicians with strong vocals."[1]
The band appeared on Balcony Television on 22 April 2009 and have been nominated for Best New Irish Act as featured on BalconyTV Dublin for the BalconyTV Music Video Awards 2009. The awards took place on 3 July.
In early 2010, the band formally evolved into Futures Apart. The name change coincided with a line-up shift and new management commitments, recording their début EP "Colour" under the production guidance of Tim O'Donovan of Neosupervital.
