The Schmo (born March 13, 1990), is a character-actor sports journalist covering mainly combat sports such as UFC. The Schmo was created by Dave Schmulenson, whom is currently based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Schmo is said to have been based in part on yiddish-style humor and Schmulenson based part of his inspiration on comedians such as Rodney Dangerfield.

Biography[edit]

Dave Schmulenson grew up in the Chicago area, but since creating The Schmo character, has operated out of the Las Vegas region.[1] The Schmo primary website is called "theschmo312" making reference to Schmulenson's Chicago heritage in that "312" is a primary area code for telephones in that region. Schmulenson is Jewish.[2]

The famous line delivered in nearly every interview involving The Schmo is, "I'm The Schmo, and he (or she) is the pro!"[3]

Schmulenson first conceived of the concept for a character actor-sports journalist around 2015, in an interview it was stated that, "...Me and my roommates were goofing around in Los Angeles, I put on the glasses and a jacket and one thing lead to another. The idea of the character began with things like that in 2015."[4] Additionally, the now famous yellow-glasses look are said to be an integral part of The Schmo character for Schmulenson, "When the glasses are on, I am in character, when they are not then I am not."[4]

In an interview from September 2021 with UFC fighter Sean Strickland,[5] Strickland comments that he long avoided interviews with The Schmo, despite best efforts made by Schmulenson, on the basis that:

...[this] dude has always asked me to do f***ing interviews and I never do it, I’m going to tell you why. When I was in high school, there was this f***king kid, dude, a goofy mother-f***er like this guy right here and he would have these weird f***ing voices and gimmicks and he would f*** all the women and me, I’m sitting in class thinking I want to f***ing kill this man. How the f*** does this f***ing loser, no offense Schmo, you’re a good looking guy, I’m sure you get a lot of chicks. Are you married? You’re not married. [But] you Schmo, you remind me of that f***ing kid, and that’s why Schmo, I’ve never done interviews with you.[5]

As of June 2022, Schmulenson's "The Schmo" Instagram account had over 200,000 followers.[6] Additionally "The Schmo" YouTube platform as of the same date has over 200,000 regular subscribers.[7] The Schmo Twitter account as of this same time period has over 26,000 followers.[8]
