The Shimmering Sky
The Shimmering Sky is a historical novel by Rik Denton about Eleanor, Fair Maid of Brittany.
The novel plot begins in 1215, during the First Barons' War. Eleanor had a complex attitude towards her uncle King John of England, who presumably murdered her younger brother Arthur I, Duke of Brittany and kept her imprisoned from 1202, but also treated her as a princess honorably and generously. She believed that as the legitimate heiress to England she could become a peaceful queen regnant, as the state needed. The novel describes her attempts to become involved in the negotiations with barons and the French, on which occasions she would express her views on her king uncles Richard I of England and John; in the process, she also developed affections for a squire.
