The Sims Resource (often referred to as simply TSR) is a Sims custom content (also known as “cc”) site offering custom content for all Sims games which can be downloaded with the intent to alter and/or expand the games. The site offers a wide variety of furniture, hairstyles, clothing items, residential lots, etc., which can all be downloaded for free and installed into people's games and used in gameplay. It was formed in 1999 by a group of players who were tired of the limitations imposed by the official Sims creators. To date, TSR has 1M+ custom floors, walls, objects, clothing, hair, and make-up to download for The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3, and The Sims 4. As of 2010, the site counts 2.2 million members and about 680,000 mods.[1]
The site was founded by Steve Bonham, Thomas Isacsson, Johan Isacsson, Jan Isacsson, and Mikeal Sundberg. It has daily updates and has a core group of featured artists who create some of the most popular and best-looking items on the site.
All downloads are available for free, and registration is not required. Initially, the site offered a subscription-based premium membership option, allowing paid users access to premium content, but this was eventually changed in October 2013, and users are now allowed to download every single article on the site, including those previously offered exclusively for subscribers. Premium users, however, can still benefit from perks such as ad-free browsing and faster, more convenient download options.
There are active forums on the site, which cover a wide variety of different topics, such as how-to forums that guide new creators in creating meshes, to general gameplay tips and tricks that everyone can use. The forums are heavily moderated, and no chatting is allowed above the PG-13 level. The moderators and staff of The Sims Resource strive to keep the entire site child-friendly and do not allow any conversation or content to be shown that could be considered R-rated.
Enthusiast Gaming
On January 7, 2019, Enthusiast Gaming Holdings Inc. announced that it would be acquiring The Sims Resource ("TSR"). A definitive agreement was signed on January 3, 2019, for the company to acquire 100% of the assets of The Sims Resource from Generatorhallen AB and IBIBI HB.[2]
On April 15, 2019, Enthusiast Gaming Holdings Inc. announced that it had closed the acquisition of 100% of the assets of The Sims Resource ("TSR"). TSR is one of the largest acquisitions to date for Enthusiast.[3]
As of December 2020, The Sims Resource has over 2.0 million monthly users, over 1 million uploaded creations, and over 8.5 million monthly visits to the webpage. Custom Content and mods continue to be free on the site whether or not visitors are members. Members who create an account have the benefit of waiting 33% less (15 seconds vs. 10 seconds), access to advanced search and filters, creation of their own profile, ability to share their creations/stories/screenshots, and following their favorite artists. VIP subscribers get all of the account perks plus additional perks including ad-free browsing, faster and more convenient download options including a download basket and Custom Content Manager, download history, infinite scrolling, and a Discord channel to speak directly with their artist community.[4]
On December 11, 2020, The Sims Resource introduced their Holiday Wonderland campaign, which brought in a new feature of Early Access for VIP subscribers. Content is accessible for non-paying/non-logged-in visitors 7 days after the content is initially released.[5]
Custom Content Safety Concerns
The Sims Resource checks all uploaded files for viruses[6] and ensures that all package files are within game specifications [7]. Ads run from an ad network that provides assurance they do not include malware/spyware. In addition, for any registrations and subscription transactions, The Sims Resource uses VeriSign to ensure all personal information is kept securely.[8]
