The Underground ,.[1] was a nightclub located at 860 Broadway in New York City, a building which also housed Andy Warhol's third The Factory and was situated at the northern edge of Union Square Park. The club opened on February 28, 1980.[2] It was owned by Maurice Brahms,[3] a former partner of Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, the original owners of Studio 54. After about a decade, the club was reimagined by BlackBook Magazine columnist Steve Lewis & Co. as Le Palace de Beauté, where RuPaul often performed. After the Underground closed, the space was renovated and became a Petco[4]
Promoter John Blair[5] got his start there. Baird Jones[6][7][8] promoted Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night parties there from 1983 to 1986, famously distributing a "Permanent Pass" featuring his caricature, and often greeting guests personally at the door. Virtually everyone who enjoyed New York City nightlife in the 1980s and lived in the Tri-State Area came into contact with the Permanent Pass.
The music videos for "I Want To Know What Love Is"[9] by Foreigner and "Word Up!"[10] by Cameo were filmed at the club.
