The Unmade Podcast is a podcast hosted by renowned educational youtuber and cinematographer, Brady Haran and Australian resident Tim Hein. Haran and Hein are close friends, both growing up in Adelaide, Australia. The podcast features a discussion between the two about "ideas for podcasts that they will never make."[2] The podcast debuted in 2017 and has had 53 episodes to date. Listeners of the podcast are referred to as "Civilians" by Haran and Hein and the Unmade Podcast community. While most episodes only include ideas for episodes, in many special episodes, Haran and Hein "make" the ideas, creating a sample episode of the proposed podcast. These test flights have included ideas such as Tommyball, an improv sports commentary podcast, letters of complaint sent in to large corporations, and a "world cup of national anthems," where Haran and Hein judge the musical quality of various countries national anthems.
Content[edit]
While most episodes simply include ideas for podcasts, there have been several "special episodes" where they do in fact bring their ideas to live. One notable example, is the series of Tommy Ball episodes where Hein plays the role of a retired professional Tommyball player. Haran interviews Hein and asks questions about various things, most notably his interest in worms[3]. This series has attracted a lot of interest[4] by the listeners of this podcast, who are known as "Civilians." Each episode usually contains four official ideas, two per co-host, as well as one additional one at the end from a patron. However, in the resulting conversation, many other ideas are often mentioned. For example, in just the first seven episodes, they had over 67 ideas[5], averaging just under 10 per episode, despite having only 28 official ones. The average length of a "normal" episode is just under an hour.
A common theme of the podcast is the city where Haran and Hein met, Adelaide. A clear example of this was Tim Hein's podcast idea titled, "Moderate Adelaide Developments." However, many seemingly unrelated ideas incite discussion of their childhood. Another recurring Adelaide-related topic is The Sofa Shop. The Sofa Shop was a shop located in Adelaide which primarily sold sofas. However, the shop also sold curtains with a matching pattern to the sofas. This is described in the famous jingle. In 2019, the shop was acquired by Berkowitz Furniture, causing much sadness.
Many episodes have also started with a count to 10 in order for Haran, the editor of the podcast to easily line up the audio. Hein is expected to join in on the number six, yet due to his short attention span, often joins late. Hein, a father of two girls, is also given two words from his daughters to discreetly include in the episodes. However, due to his forgetfulness, he often forgets until the end, slipping them in with a less subtle manner.
History[edit]
The podcast was started on August 22nd, 2017. Brady has said that the idea for the topic of the podcast came after his decision to start a podcast with Tim Hein. He says they chose the final idea because they could not decide which of their many ideas was the best and wanted to share all of them.[6] The podcast has been increasingly active each year.[7]
Merchandise[edit]
Renowned Civilians[edit]
As stated above, most episodes include an idea from a patron at the end of the show. This is a list of those patrons as well as other Civilians mentioned in the podcast and short description of them and their idea as they are perceived by a stranger. While most of these patrons are Canadians, some are not.
