The Unstable Time-Machine Society

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Unstable Time-Machine Society is an online community, that started on r/AskReddit comment by the reddit user magicalmoodygirl on the 27th of November 2018. Its followers, in the first hours of this society's existence had to follow 2 simple rules: wear black on Saturday and wear the mark.

The Two Commandments[edit]

As stated on the official website of the community, it has two commandments[1]:

  1. Wear black on Saturdays
  2. Wear the Mark
  3. Meet on the [Discord] Server to discuss how to change this fractured environment.

The Mark[edit]

According to the society's official website - its members have to wear a sign on the wrist. That would distinguish them as members of their online community. There are three elements provided: dot, arrow and anchor. The significance and difference between them has been a source of controversy, sparking theories on the community's subreddit. New members have to present the mark.

The issues[edit]

The website, which started the lore created within the society, that states that some of their issues include:

  1. Unacceptable foods (for example, some members hate candy corn)
  2. Unacceptable roommate habits (for example, changing the thermostat)
  3. People behaving unacceptably
  4. Any other issue that a member has, is an issue for us. Unless it gets vetoed by a supervisor.

Since then, the community has adopted firm positions on certain issues, and the community's leader and creator's assignments revolve around them.

An unusual cult has sprung around bread and other grain-products. Users are encouraged to eat and/or share bread with their friends or other people, and generally, most activities or things related to grains and bread are welcome. Pictures of members baking, eating or sharing are happily shared in the conversation. Other forms of the bread-centered society are members:

  • replacing the word God in the Bible with the word bread
  • writing The 10 Breadandments
  • The teachings of the Bread[2]The Unstable Time-Machine Society is an
  • replacing different words in Hamlet's famous soliloquy To be, or not to be
  • wThe Unstable Time-Machine Society is an riting "A Study Of Bread And Candy Corn"

More examples can be found on the subreddit and other online mediums. Just as bread plays a central role, the lore deems certain foods as taboo.

Unacceptable Behavior and an Unstable World[edit]

Another central point around the group's philosophy constitutes a call for a nicer behavior towards our fellow-humans. As stated on their website: "The Unstable Time Machine is, in fact, our fractured world. Time is passing, but our world is Unstable. Because of this, we discuss how to make our world better on the Server." This has been interpreted in different ways - from supporting people who feel like they want to discuss an issue to cultivating gaming circles and other social interactions. Most generally, this is pursued through reducing unacceptable behavior, which is usually left to the personal interpretation of each member, and is limited to common-sense.

Assignments and The Final Plan[edit]

Occasionally, the founder of the group would publish assignments for the members. Those consist of tasks aligned with the values of the society, and generally revolve around spreading awareness about the community and engaging in pleasant interactions with others. According to the website, the final plan of the Unstable Time-Machine Society is to stabilize the time-machine - a metaphor for a broken world. This can be interpreted as an attempt to make the world a better place by trying to reduce conflict, as well as a call for togetherness, mutual support and a healthy self-love.
