The Wastes is an open-source first-person shooter video game by developer Vera Visions. The Wastes was originally a Half-Life deathmatch mod named Wasteland Half-Life.

Gameplay[edit]

The Wastes is a first-person shooter based in a post-apocalyptic/nuclear holocaust North America, where bands of survivors duke it out in an all-out deathmatch. The scenario and features are inspired by various post-apocalyptic fictional works such as the Mad Max movies and the Fallout series of games.

The game features akimbo weapons and over 6 different melee weapons including katanas, sledgehammers, spears, and bats. The environments range from harsh wastelands to blistering hot deserts to icy frozen mountains.

Development[edit]

The Wastes was originally a total conversion mod for the game Half-Life, first released in 2000 under the name of Wasteland Half-Life.[1]

Wasteland Half-Life would be renamed to The Wastes in March 2002[2] and would later release under that branding in June 2003.[3][4]

With the release of Half-Life 2, the development of The Wastes shifted focus to the Source Engine by Valve Corporation under the titles Wasteland Half-Life 2[5] and The Wastes: Source[6][7]. They would both cease development and never see a release.

The full The Wastes retail version was announced by Vera Visions in July 2016 at QEXPO 2016.[8] The game was released on 12 April 2018 after about three year of work by a team of two developers.[9]
