The Window on Death Row [Spain, 2025] is an Oscar-qualifying short documentary directed by Linda Catherine Freund. The film follows Joaquín José Martínez, the first Spaniard to be exonerated from U.S. death row. It premiered at the Rhode Island International Film Festival where it won the Audience Choice Award for best short documentary. It, then, screened theatrically in Los Angeles as part of the Breaking Boundaries award-winning shorts showcase.[1][2][3][4]
Synopsis
Joaquín José Martínez was convicted in Florida in 1997, at the age of 24, of a double murder. He spent more than five years in prison, including three years on death row, before being exonerated, becoming the first Spaniard freed from U.S. death row.[5]
The film documents his attempts to process the trauma of wrongful incarceration. It follows him reconnecting with a former death-row chaplain, visiting historical Spanish prison sites related to the Franco era, and engaging in spiritual reflection with his family during Valencia’s Fallas festival.[6]
Release
The film had its world premiere on August 9, 2025, at the Rhode Island International Film Festival in Providence, RI.[7]
From September 19 to 25, 2025, it screened at Laemmle Glendale (Los Angeles) as part of RIIFF’s Breaking Boundaries Award-Winning Shorts Showcase.[8]
A future screening is scheduled for October 16, 2025 at the La Femme International Film Festival in Los Angeles.[9]
