The Womb (original title: Inang) is a 2022 horror film directed by Fajar Nugros. This film stars Naysilla Mirdad, Dimas Anggara, Rukman Rosadi, and Lydia Kandou.[1] This is the first horror film produced by IDN Pictures and involves the story about the traditional ritual named Rebo Wekasan.[2]

The Womb had its world premiere on July 7, 2022 at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) and received a wide theatrical release on October 13, 2022.[3] Rukman Rosadi and Wawan I. Wibowo were nominated for the 2022 Citra Award for Best Supporting Actor and Best Picture Editor respectively. Since February 16, 2023, The Womb is available to stream on Netflix.[4][5]

Plot

The Womb tells the story of Wulan, a supermarket employee whose boyfriend abandoned her during her pregnancy. Desperate Wulan later met Eva and Agus Santoso, who wanted to adopt her child and offered her to live at their house. While living in the house, Wulan slowly began to uncover the hidden intentions of the Santoso Family.[6]

Inspiration

The Womb story is inspired from the Javanese traditional ritual named Rebo Wekasan or Rabu Pungkasan. Based on Javanese culture, Rebo Wekasan is the last Wednesday of Safar that brings bad luck for people. Thus, a particular ceremony must be performed to avoid the omen.
