The traitor translator (Arabic:المترجم الخائن )is the eighth novel by Syrian novelist Fawaz Haddad. [1]The novel was first released in 2008 by Riad al-Reis Book and Publishing House in Lebanon. The novel was translated into German and entered into the final "short" list of the 2009 World Prize for Arabic Fiction, known as the "Booker" Prize.[2]

About the novel[edit]

This novel, Generally Human Relations in the Arab World, monitors Tunisia, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria through "Hamid", the pivotal character,[3] and two equivocal characters "Ahmed Halfani", "Afif Halfawi" and others. The character of the translator accused of treason, Hamed, because of his different vision of the meaning of translation and the values of thought, civilization, culture, and creativity, weaves a vast and rich network of relationships between writers, journalists, and critics to say that the art of writing, and concerning human beings, freedom, and life, is no longer subordinate, exploited, bargained, opportunistic and extorted.[4]

Quotes from the novel[edit]

In a dialogue between Sami (an old friend of Hamid) and Hamid Salim (the main character), speakers of the "literary elite" in the Arab world:

  • (Sammy):... Although I rule out that the cultural mafia is related to the criminal mafia, the analogy between them is obvious, both of them do not hesitate to do whatever is immoral. Culturally superior to criminality, not only is it more shrewd, but it can bravely provide the moral and human justifications for the corruption of its members and camouflage their degradation with profound philosophical or psychological dimensions, nihilistic or surreal flaand maybeybee romantic, perhaps Darwinian, that is, not prejudiced by justification. I didn't invent anything, I heard about them... Outrageous things that the forehead shamefully denies. Believe me, they are not innocent. (The dominant fathers on the cultural scene) that is to say, to be their agent, until they include him in their lining, otherwise his fate was crushed and righteous, and at best to survive arising in the world of literature, even if he was old.
  • And Hamid said, "Don't you know the authority is there?"
  • Sami said, "Of course you know, but she only cares about what threatens her, and she doesn't take on trivial attitudes like brawls and literary animosities.
  • But clandestine gatherings and conglomerates have been forbidden?
  • And Sammy said, "As long as you don't work against them, you'll condone them."
  • Why don't you recognize them as an existing organization?
  • And Sami said, 'Because she doesn't give them weight, except that buying them individually is cheaper.
